Default Autobox oil symptoms?

What would the symptoms be of very old/knackered/low oil in an Autobox on a v40 1.8, 2001?

If the gearbox oil has never been changed it'll certainly be old! Does the car have a gearbox dipstick? If so have a look at the colour of the oil if it's brown that's not good if it's black that's most definitely bad, also have a sniff at the end of the dipstick to see if it smells burnt.Take the car for a run to get it to temperature park on level ground and select each gear position for a second or two from park through to lowest gear position and back to park then leaving engine running[in park] check the level.Similar test can be done on cars with no dipstick by using the filler/level plug on the gearbox although of course this is more awkward as it means getting under the car to access the plug.Only auto box I've ever driven with low oil was a 5 series BMW and in that when setting off from a standstill the revs rose with no movement for a second or so before the drive was taken up with a thump which was both heard and felt!
