I don't buy it, that's not what the handbook says will happen if the DPF gets to the point it need regeneration. Try Volvo customer services or get the dealer to email Sweden. I think it's more likely a warning to drive slowly for some reason that the sensors or radar or cameras are picking up.

I wonder if for some reason it showed up in error as it may be on the dash for the V60 Hybrid? Or maybe the power of your battery was too low to run all the systems that were being asked for. I found a web site that said......

This is a Power Limitation Indicator symbol and is used exclusively in electric vehicles. The amber image has two possible meanings, depending on the manufacturer. The use of the image of a turtle embedded in a circle tells the driver what he or she already knows: that the vehicle is less responsive than expected.

European manufacturers use it when the electric power is in reserve range. Power to the traction motor and thus the drive wheels is restricted when the vehicle sees the range drop to four miles or less.

In the Far East, this symbol is used to indicate that power has been reduced due to a fault. It can be driven but will need the attention of your dealer for repair as soon as possible.

Hello Roy, you're right - I've checked the mammoth manual again, this time searching for the DPF reference:

"When the filter has become approx. 80% full
of particles, a yellow warning triangle is
shown in the combined instrument panel, and
the message Soot filter full See manual is
shown in its display."

and

"The following may arise during regeneration:
• a smaller reduction of engine power
may be noticed temporarily
• fuel consumption may increase temporarily
• a smell of burning may arise."

I didn't get the specific message. Now I know that another forum member ordered an AWD D4 and ended up with a FWD version......but I am pretty sure that my VEA D4 is not Volvo's first attempt at an experimental pilot hybrid. At least, if it is, the MPG isn't going to win any awards for a hybrid!

I think this is what I'll do.......since the message has gone, the dealer's checked it and it's under warranty - we'll just sit tight. If the tortoise returns then we'll ramp it up a bit (the query not the tortoise). I am driving the car today (I am allowed a go at the weekends!).

Thanks everyone for the banter - some of the jokes were pretty good. Swissy, I always use Shell fuel because that's what tortoise prefer - Nitro V-power actually.

Hi Arianne

I tried to look at the V60 Hybrid handbook to see if it appears in there, but Volvo won't let me access it on their web site. Any V60 Hybrid owners care to take a look?

I have wondered if it's a computer error, like when your phone or tablet throw a wobbly occasionally and don't load up correctly when they first start up.

I'll drop my dealer an email and see if they have any idea.

All the best,

Roy

Not sure what you problem accessing the manual was/is - all available online

This shows the symbols that appear in the hybrid display - no tortoise

Can't see a tortoise in the XC60 manual either (just change car to get to XC60)

Definitely not a hybrid symbol. The symbols are almost the same except for pre heating and the drive train symbol.

The battery and power symbols all seem more sophisticated than a picture of a tortoise. Doesn't seem to be one for a dead electric motor.

Drove it today and it's running fine. Nothing of note except.......

After a brief shut-down while we walked to a café in a nearby village to take coffee on a return trip from Edinburgh, there was a new message on the re-start. This time it is a symbol of a spanner and the message reads something like ......hang, on - I'll nip out and take a look so I get this right, since she's on the drive.

Back soon!

Do you have a a picture of the tortoise? How close is it to the one I posted? No other manufacturer is using a tortoise for an engine management warning.

My dealer said this...
Quote:
think it is probably the ‘Engine Management’ warning message……………if it was a Yellow one ?

I would think it looks similar to a tortoise, as I do not believe Volvo has such a sense of humour to light up a tortoise sign to slow you down !!

Hope this helps

Best regards

Bill Clarke

It should be a turtle and not a tortoise symbol.

.............."book time for scheduled maintenance".

The car will be 12mths old on 8 March so perhaps this is the usual reminder?

Otherwise, nothing of note.

If I ever see the tortoise again I'll take a photo of him. I didn't realise he is so elusive!
