I have noticed that there have been a few postings regarding timing belts, I have just contacted my local dealer in the N East of England, asking when my is due a change (1997 V40) and was advised 8 years or 80,000 miles. OK says I how much for the parts and how much for you to do the job, about £80 for the belt and tensioner, or about £550 for us to do!!!!!, that will no doubt have parts and VAT added, so will cost me £600-£700. I have a year to think about this, and will more than likely do this myself, has anyone changed the timing belt on a V40? are there any special tools or tips you can give?

I would not leave the belt change over 60000,my car which was purchased just in time for a belt change and the belt was slack and lifting up to the top of the teeth on the pulleys. It was'nt far from jumping the pulleys and mega expense.
I would not have trusted it many miles more. This mileage was done on mainly motorways and if it is used locally then the mileage limit should be reduced drastically. I also changed my tensioner, but mine has done 150,000. I obtained the mileage figures from the previous owner. I changed my belt and you need plenty of tools and a lifting beam for the engine or you could support the engine with a jack. The top engine mount has to come off and a lot of work is under the front wheel arch. It makes the Issigonis mini a piece of **** to work on compared to it. I have never had such a ******** of a job since I was an apprentice mechanic (which was a long time ago). I must say that the prat who designed this abortion should be hung out to dry. Good luck. Try doing a GDI cambelt, it makes them look like a walk in the park.
We don't use any special tools to do the job you just need the os wheel off (it makes it hell of alot easier) and something to support the engine, we just usually use a trolly jack are you can lift and lower the engine easier. |

thanks for the replies...no way am I paying for dealer to do the job, have noticed service prices are ridiculous (200+ to change brake pads!) guess I better get busy, have done timing belts before and on my previous Volvo 360 that was a bit of a pig as well.
I think they push the cars out at a reasonable(ish) price hoping to get you on the aftercare...maybe I'm just an old cynic? |

I reckon the service prices they charge, they should give the cars away.
