Default Key fob not working

So a few months ago a key fob stopped working. I put it down to the battery, slung it in the draw and forgot about it and have been using the other key. This morning I decided I really should go and get a new battery. So I put it in, fob will not remotely unlock the car, but it will start it.

What could this be?

I'm not overly bothered because as a spare I can still unlock the car by pulling the metal bit out and doing it manually, then like I said it will start the car as normal.

If it was a simple repair I'd do it, if it means going to Volvo and spending hundreds and getting new keys programmed then I'm not bothered.

It seems the remote part of the key has packed up , always wise to have 2 fully working remotes with the car as the possibility of loosing your only working one becomes a big problem .

So I assume getting a replacement would be something that can only be done Volvo at great expense?

yes only a dealer or independant can do the work ... key is about £80 i believe + software and labour of no more than 20 minutes . OH and VAT of course , isn't everything expensive these days ?

Yes, the fobs actually have THREE locking systems: the blade key, the battery operated remote, and the RFID actual ignition key in the shaft of the fob.

Make sure to get a bubble-pack OEM key. Used keys cannot be programmed in to your car. Slightly cheaper to buy key from on-line parts and have dealer just do the programming part. Total cost in US is $250- $300 dollars. Make sure dealer REMOVES old key from car's list.

Quote from independent specialist today, £222 all in for a new key.

On the basis the car is 9 years old and I've got a working key and for the sake of taking the metal bit out if I do need to use it as a spare I think I'll leave that!

Just a word of advice, you may double-check pricing in dealership aswell. For me - cheapest quote I got was actually from Volvo (250e all in) vs 290e from indie.

We recently bought a Volvo C70 2.4i (Late 2008). Both key fobs stopped working last night and had to lock doors with metal key blade in fob. Our mechanic said we may need a new car battery, which funnily enough means disconnecting the old battery (this is the clue) in order to install the new battery. First, with ignition OFF (I had key fob in my pocket) try disconnecting your existing car battery. I did this for about 5 mins then reconnected the battery. This sorted the problem. Both key fobs working again hopefully saving a few quid on a new battery/ new fobs etc.
