Default Headlights from face-lift 960 or S/V90

G'day guys,

Bought a pair of headlight beam angle adjustment motors & dash switch lately, was intending to fit them on my S90s which doesn't have them but is pre-wired. I've done this upgrade on my face-lift 760 (with 940 style headlights) previously and expecting the motors to fit behind the existing headlights just as it did on the 760, I was horrified to find that on the face-lift 960's the headlight housing is actually slightly different on cars with electric beam angle adjusters so the motors won't fit.

So if anyone can sell me two pairs of headlights from a face-lift 960 or S/V90 which has electric beam angle adjusters, please let me know. I don't need the adjustment motors, just the headlight's fine.

Regards,
William

Hi Jim,

I doubt your '88 model is pre-wired for the headlight beam angle adjusters, and besides the motors & switch from '95- 960 wouldn't fit 760 headlights anyway.

Volvo introduced headlight beam angle adjusters in 1990, initially on cars built to West German market specifications (back before East & West Germany were united!). This was subsequently introduced on cars built for other markets as well.

I've done this conversion on my LHD '90 Volvo 760 in Taiwan, it was built with Europe/Overseas spec wiring and I found that it was pre-wired for the adjusters. I doubt North American spec Volvos are pre-wired as this was never offered on North American models, and my RHD '90 Volvo 740 in Australia wasn't pre-wired either so I suspect only LHD cars were pre-wired on earlier models.

To see if your 740 / 760 / 940 or -'94 960 is pre-wired or not, check under the dash where all the switches are, if you find a grey 4-pin connector hanging somewhere that should be for the switch. Also look behind the headlights, if you find a large 3-round pin connector similar to the headlight wiper connector but in black that should be for the adjustment motors.

On the earlier headlights, as long as your car is pre-wired it's a simple matter of fitting the switch on the dash & the motors behind the headlight. Unfortunately this was changed on the '95- facelift 960 as I found out the hard way, the headlights are also different so they need to be changed as well.

How different is it, is it like a really big difference, or can it fit with some customization?

I wouldn't attempt it, easier just to swap the whole unit.
Here's photos of electric vs manual beam angle adjusters on late 960 (S/V90) headlights, electric is on the left.
