Default Lack of Power and trouble starting.

Hi gang,

Had a problem starting my V50 2.0D 2006 (non DPF) this morning

Drove back from Banbury to Birmigham last night up the M40 and had no issues until I pulled off the motorway and started driving along the "A" roads. Came to pull away at a juntion and found I had very little power and ended up crawling away. No warning lights on the dash...almost felt like it had run out of fuel but I had 1/2 tank left. This happened a couple of times but then everything seemed to be fine again and full power was restored and I got home and parked up for the night. Came out this morning and it wouldn't start -it turned over but wouldn't fire, again no warning lights on the dash. Called Volvo Roadside Assist and they were there in 30mins. The guy got plugged in found error P1412 - exhaust gas recirculation valve "pending".
He located the valve at the rear right hand of the engine and tapped it very lightly, cleared the error in the system log and it sprang into life. The guy explained what it was and it was probably dirty. He stopped an started the car several times with no problems and I drove it around a while to make sure it was ok. No problems on my way to work either. Will take it for a spin lunch time to make sure.

Questions are..

1) Is this a known issue?
2) Should I look to get the valve replaced or just put it down as a one off.
3) If I do get it replaced is it going to be expensive? (only looks like 2 cap-head pins and a electrical conector)
4) Can it be cleaned instead of replaced.
5) Is there any alternative I haven't thought of.

As always any help appreciated.

I would suspect the Exhaust Gas Recirc valve so get that looked at. Dont know how much they are so do a little digging through these threads and it should throw up some light on the subject.

Dont forget that if you need to buy one and fit yourself "Rufe" does darn good prices and quick service.

Hope this helps.

When I first joined this forum a few years back now, I remember that some members with early 2.0D engines did have issues with egr, but not all.

I also think I'm correct in saying that there was a modified egr that Volvo brought out that was smore reliable.

As has been said on previous post, do a bit of digging and I'm sure you will be able to get a few answers and possibly confirm what I've just said.

Default DPFE Sensor

I see this post isnt too old.

If its the DPFE (see pic) then I would replace, they are about £80 and easy to fit. They can be found on ebay uk from time to time.

I replaced this and it help greatly with loss of power/acceleration problems.

Part says XC90 but are interchangeable - this item closed unsold, try contacting the seller....

If a different sensor please post a pic....

Can be cleaned but they can be a real real pig to get off!! Even causing damage . (i think the above is a picture of the actuator not the metal valve which sticks inside) just unplug it, it defaults to open and wont stick shut again,
causes no issues/warn lamps/mot. But you will be killing the environment a little bit more!.

It was a concern on the 2.0D engine. I had 4 fitted until they brought out a modified part that cured it for good. ISTR that it was covered outside the warranty too.

The old one had a motor to open it and a spring to close it (or vice versa). The first mod was a bigger spring but that didn't cure it. The second mod was a motor to open and close it. Had one of those fitted and all has been well since (about 4 years now).

I would contact Volvo and ask if yours was changed to the modified part and if not whether they would be willing to contribute to it at all.
