Default uneven rear tyre wear

Hi there
1990 340 1.4. 79,000 miles.

Have just checked my rear tyres and found a noticable differecne in the wear on the two rear tyres. Both tyres were fitted at the same time, and are Goodyear 'Clubs'.

The passenger side tyre was much more worn down (evenly across the tread) than the driver's side rear tyre. I pay attention to tyre pressures etc so could not blame this.

Does anyone have any ideas? (I wondered if maybe the drive diff persistently led to one side getting more worn). It is not serious enough to warrant major surgery since the tyres are lasting but I just wondered about this.

(Tyres have been on since 1999 - we do about 8,000 miles per year - so not a lot of heavy use really).

I have swapped the 2 back ones to even the wear and get more life out of them.

HMM - Goodyear Club
Direct Line (cheapskates) put these on my Escort when they repaired it and I couldn't work out why the ride and handling deteriorated so rapidly until the tyres wore out (a flat at 70mph on the M62) and I put Goodyear GT2s on. Then I realised the clubs are rubbish tyres....

I have also had that problem with a Goodyear Club wearing on the outer edge on the front .I swopped it to the back and that one is ok so I put it down to a poorly made tyre as the tracking was ok.

Interesting comments - I had just assumed as a 'brand' Goodyear would be OK - goes to show that like everything else it pays to not believe the hype!

Those 2 comments suggest the reason is nothing better than poor quality product.

Thanks for the contributions.

Does anyone have any views on a good value tyre for a 300 series then? (ie good combination of price and longevity - I never mind paying more if I know I am actually going to get something worthwhile - as one manufacturer used to say 'the quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten' can't rememebr who - probably Rolls Royce!!)

I assume the car was originally supplied by Volvo with Uniroyal Rallye's as that is what the unused spare is - but my tyre stockist said that pattern is not available anymore and I wanted a match.

I have had some Kelly radials although I didn't get the chance to wear them out as I sold the Escort after doing maybe 6,000 miles on them. They were OK while I had them and are not expensive...
