Default Tailgate won't open

The tailgate on my V70 series III won't open using the fob, boot button or dashboard button.
No noise when activated, so its not a sticking lock.
I've never had any issue with it to date.
The Information display shows the boot as open, but it is clearly shut.

It has just occured to me that the tailgate mechanism may not be receiving power, which may explain the boot open signal. But, it's dark now so can't investigate further, but would appreciate any assistance in fault finding.

Is there an emergency boot release tucked away somewhere?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hello

As the tailgate is not metal all the powered components rely on an earth wire in the headlining, which has a habit of failing.

Try running a long wire with crocodile clips from a body earth to the rear wiper spindle which should at least restore the earth path and allow you to open the tailgate.

My own thread on this very subject should help you...

Many thanks for the reference. I will try this at the weekend.

When you pry out the cover over the wiper spindle, push on the tab from behind, to avoid ruining it.

Do absolutely not follow that advice before you've tried grounding the rear wiper spindle first!

Default Valet locking

If you have locked the glove compartment, this will stop the rear door from opening.

I never knew this!! Its worth knowing that....however the OP does state theres a tailgate open message on the dash, which is consistent with the earth fault

Thanks again for your assistance. It was a bit difficult working on my back and with such short leads but it's done now. Had not realised when I first posted that the earth fault had also taken out the wipers, screen heater and tailgate brake lights, which confirmed the likely cause. Incidentally the earth plug pin looked clean and with no obvious breaks.
