Default 940 Manual to Auto Conversion

Hello everyone, I have a 94 2.0 Wentworth auto and a 97 2.3 Celebration and want to swap them around so I have the auto in the Celebration, bearing in mind the difference in their ages, is it possible?

Many thanks

No reason why not, diff ratio and gearing in the box may be different due to 2.0 & 2.3

Default 940 Manual to Auto Conversion

Okey doke, I assume by removing the spigot bearing, the drive plate and torque converter will bolt straight on?

As well as the fundamental mechanical considerations I suspect there will be a few more niggly things to deal with.

Wiring for reversing lights and start inhibitor
Trim around the gear selectors - probably interchangeable between the two
Pedals and compatibility between different brake master cylinders
Possibly ECU maps, but they might sort themselves out
Possibly the ABS/Speed sensor in the rear axle

There have been a number of posts over the years about auto to manual conversions which would be worth reviewing.

Probably also a buggeration/cost factor to deal with because both cars will then being modified for insurance purposes.

Off the top of my head you would need to swap the following:

Pedals
Gear selector trim
Clutch master and slave cylinder
Brake fluid reservoir
Propshaft
Gearbox crossmember
Flywheel/flexiplate
Spigot bearing
Radiator (the Wentworth will have a built in gearbox oil cooler)

The wiring for the Wentworth you would need to solder the starter inhibitor wires together. For reverse lights you will need to cut the wires from the selector and solder the reverse switch wiring from the manual to the cars loom. On the celebration you would have to solder the cut wires from the cars reverse loom to the selector, you won't have a starter motor inhibitor though so you will have to make sure you're in park or neutral before trying to start it. You will also need to wire up power for the selector illumination bulb.

All in all it isn't a five minute job, I'm intrigued as to why you want to do it?

You might find some useful info in my project thread from when I converted my 940 from a slushbox to M90.

Speedo/ABS won't need touching, the Wentworth will be fine on its original ECU and I'm sure the celebration will detect load and the idle valve will bring the revs up when sat still in drive so you shouldn't need to touch the ECU's either.

Also add the drive select wiring to the ECU (It will stall when you put it in gear otherwise). The ECUs are the same and I think the plugs are there, should just be a case of plugging in, but hard to know if there is an extra piece.

As to the diff ratio, I don't know about the 2L but the later 2.3 is a different ratio between auto and manual. I don't know the exact reason but I do know that a B230FK auto is horribly slow on take off due to the lower ratio, and terrible economy (22mpg compared with the same person driving a B230FT manual and getting 30mpg without trying). They actually use alot more rear brake pads, the engine is fighting the brakes alot.

Easiest way is to swap the badges.
