Default Yet another A/C question

I see there is another A/C question.

Does the forum ever do a survey to measure which questions and faults have come up the most with 850/V70's?
Air con faults must be near the top. I've spent over a grand getting trained Volvo 'techicians' to repair the system on my 850. It's currently working fine after spending £120 on another valve (whatever) but only time will tell.
I've had running disputes with Volvo UK and got basically stone-walled but looking at the frequency of these faults it looks to be there is something fundamentally wrong with these cars.
Can anyone advise as the best way to prolong the life of air con systems? For example, are the independent service centres in the Yello pages a better bet?

Sorry, but Volvo should really sort this out.

It's one of Volvo's main problems with the 850's

Mine is ok, but the compressor is on it's way out, and it doesn't work when the car is in traffic. I use some bloke from the Yello Pages, not paying Volvo prices!

I understand that one weakness of the 850s are the evaporators which spring a leak. These are inside the dash so there is little you can do to prevent problems.

Another common leak point is the condensor (in front of the radiator). These are made of aluminium and corrode. My aircon man told me to hose the radiator down every time I washed the car to remove any salt and thereby increase the condensor's life.

Finally, keep an eye out for anything chafing against the ali pipework.

Another problem is the lack of a standard cabin air filter - the pollen filter.

Many 850s including mine had full ECC but no filter, which means that crud gets into the system and clogs up the evaporator and other items, causing early failure.

Get and fit a pollen filter and replace it twice-yearly, this will at least minimise problems, if it's not too late already.

What are the signs of evaporators leaking? I ask simply because when I turn on the air con on my '95 T5 Estate water appears to get into the fan housing on the passenger side and drips into the footwell. However the air con works well ie; cools and heats up and demists the car quickly?Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards Giles.
