Default Track rod inner joint replacement

Evening All,

My 94 T5 estate was in for new roll bar links last week and they noticed play in the inner track rod joints. I have purchased a new pair from Euro Car Parts (£27 ea versus £67 ea from VCC...) and aim to have them fitted asap. My local garage is very helpful but has never done these before - mention of special tools etc ...

The new track rod and integral knuckle looks like it just screws into the end of the steering rack (probably removing the gaiter first etc). However the knuckle "housing" is a featureless cylinder with no apparent flats or features to get a tool onto to screw the thing in ! ? It does look substantial enough to get some Stilsons on but I imagine access will be restricted (without removing the rack ... not preferred !)

Any thoughts or help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

Default RE: Track rod inner joint replacement

Evening All,

For anyone who may have the same problem (vibration thru' sterring wheel under braking, but NOT warped brake disks) this seems like a straight forward job. My local (non-specialist garage has just fitted two new track rods (£67 @ Volvo, £27 @ Europarts)for the price of 1.5 hrs labour (@ £35/hr) + vat = £61 ! Bargain ! saved me 3 hrs messing about in the road outside ...
