Question Splash guard cracked - Cost to repair properly?

Hey.

So I took my S40 for its first service since I bought it from the dealer last month, when doing the 200 mile drive down south (to where the garage I was taking it to is) I noticed that I could hear a sort of flapping foil sound when I had the passenger window down, so I checked when I got to my parent's house and saw that the splash guard (I think that's what it's called anyway - bit of plastic on the body side of the bottom of the wheel arch) was cracked. I have no idea what happened or even if it was like this when I got the car last month, it's hard to see unless you're specifically looking for it.

Anyway, I mentioned this to the garage when it went for its service today and they've "repaired it" using cable ties but I have a feeling I can still hear it flapping, although it's nowhere near as loud and obvious.

I wanted to ask if any of you know how much this will cost to get fixed properly and whether it's worth it? I'm trying to keep the car in good condition.

Looks like the main wheel arch liner. Part number: 30678143. You may be able to pick one up from a breaker for not much, otherwise it's not too expensive to buy new by the looks of things.

EDIT: diagnosis only from the photos you've given which are rather close for getting much by way of location reference.

Hi and thanks.

I can get a few more pictures later today if that helps then. If I buy the part is this something I can easily fit myself or not - I have no tools with me whatsoever? If I do take it to the garage to get done do you have any idea how much the labour would cost?

Thanks,
Eddy

I'm afraid I have no idea about labour cost. I live in Sweden and even then, I've never paid for any work to be done on my car besides scheduled service.

As for fitting it yourself you would of course need to find/borrow a few basic tools. You'll need to remove the wheel to get the liner out and in then it's all held in place with torx screws.

For an experienced mechanic it'll be a 10 minute job, for someone inexperienced, half an hour tops.

Check the prices on new parts at one of the on-line parts places. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. The full under-engine panel is around $100 in the US, while the wheel liners are a little less. (Personally, the garage's fix looks good enough to me...)

You will need a torx screwdriver, either or both #25 and #30. If that is the fender liner, you will also need a 10mm socket, and will need to pull the associated wheel.

This could be a good way to break into the DIY life!

Okay thanks.

I might see if I can get a deal on the liner then, otherwise I'll make do. So is it literally the torx screw drivers I'll need, nothing else? I don't want to do any drilling etc but I thought I read on another article about having to drill the screws out?

Thanks,
Eddy
