Default engine flush good or bad?

i noticed some mayo on the end of the dip stick the other day, which considering the car has a fvsh and the oil was changed 5k ago, made me think it must have been stood for some time before i bought it. so time to do an oil+filter change. what im wondering is whether to use a flushing fluid first, and if so which should i use? the mechanics at the college recomend to do it, but im a little more caucious of anything which thins the oil out like that stuff, even if it is only for a short time.

don't flush it just use a synthetic oil and change more often.

mayo on the dipstick is from condensation forming because the motors not getting hot enough usually because of short trips.

take it for a long motorway run and i bet the mayo will go or just wait for the weather to get warmer ;)

I wouldn't flush it either, I'd just drain it fully (including the turbo) and then refill.

Using a flushing agent may remove more of the old oil but IMHO it will do more harm than good because if it stips the engine of oil, there will be friction components which will take a little while to re-lubricate therefore increasing wear during those vital moments after the first start up following a flush and change.

Andy

not really you will always get oil left in the engine after it has been emptied.

if you want to be really picky do the oil cooler too but be warned a clip for the pipe that you have to disconnect is a fiver!!! from a dealer.

Actually Chaps... The correct way to flush, is to use a product called Asta3000 Designed by a BP Engineer, apply to car, drive for around 600 miles, drain oil, change filter, the apply a cheap oil to the correct level, allow the car to heat up to the proper temp, then redrain and change filter, THEN apply new filter and correct oil/Good oil. You won't go wrong there and the oil should remain cleaner longer!!! The reason for the change twice, is to remove any dirt and debris that the first change has left in the sump, then the second restores to normal what the car should have!

Done this many a time, NEVER had a problem despite what all the soapbox critics say, and I've had a few "Specials" in in my time including...

BMW 735 Straight 6 engine

Rover V8

AUDIS 2.2 5 CYLINDER & A 270BHP 5 Cylinder TURBO Quattro

VW VR6 2.8

Volvo B280E, B230, 1.7 MULTI POINT, 1.8i

Jaguar V12

Plymouth Barracuda 6.6 litre V8

All of which are still on the road today, as someone else said earlier, CHANGE THE OILS MORE FREQUENTLY, You won't go far wrong with that advice :-)

Hope this helps...

Regards

does it break then, or do you have to break it to get the hose off?

if your really careful you can get it off without bending it too much but even still when you put it back on it won't grip as tight although you can put a jubilee cip or cable tie round it to give it some strength, i did this and it worked fine but next time i'll have to give those thieving dealers a fiver for a tiny little clip that probably cost them 0.00000001p to make. :(
