Default 740 gl 1988 sump nut

Hi please can you answer my question i have about taking off the sump nut on my 740.

I have not had the car long and would like to change the oil as i do not know how old the oil is in the car.I have loosened the oil filter and removed the engine cover underneath. When i got to the sump nut it would not budge.Haines say i need a 8mm squre sunp nut key,but the nut on the sump is about 26mm spanner fits the nut which is hexegon in shape, frustrating as i can not get the sump nut to budge.

Please can you advise if i need to get a sump nut key set IE draper as i am looking to buy this set at the moment very frustrating as i have some lovely castrol gtx magnatec to pour in and make the engine purrr.

The sump plug should undo using a socket spanner (Cannot remember the exact size of the socket, but it's quite big), so no special tools are needed, apart from a good socket set :)

If it is very tight you will need a 1" or 25mm flat sided (hex) socket.
Just for info the one with the temp sensor is 22mm.
Don't forget to fit a new washer.

I had an idea it was one of those! :P

Oddly enough, in ten years of changing motor oil, I have never once replaced the sump plug washer, nor suffered any oil leaks as a consequence...

You've been lucky, that's all.

Best regards, Nick.
