Default oil leak

hi,
newbie here so please forgive my ignorance. Ive just bought an 87 740 gl manual 2litre and its got an oil leak, the leak is coming from the oil cap and also ive noticed that pressure is coming from the dipstick although there is no leak here at the moment. Ive had a read through the posts and flame trap gets a few mentions as a possible culprit. Also breather pipes. Can anyone tell me in real plain english where i will find these items as in my haynes manual for some reason there are no diagrams or photographs for the complete 2 litre version at the start of the book, only 2.3 litre and a couple of other versions, therefore i dont know where to start to look. Also will i have to take things apart/off to get at them.
trust me you wont be insulting my intelligence so as basic a terms as you can please
many thanks.

The flame trap and breather pipes are the same as on the 2.3 engine. Assuming yours is the injection model the breather is located behind the air mass meter ( the unit with the rubber bellows above it). It is not easy to get at you are working more by feel than anything. Access can be improved by removing the air mass meter meter. You may find the rubber mounts are broken and should replace if they are. This is a Volvo part at about £8 each. The bellows can be a little tricky to refit - ensure it is sealing properly. Reckon on replacing the holder as well as the flame trap (many people bin these - I don't). Their are two pipes coming off this one small vacuumpipe aone larger breather pipe. Sometimes the box on the block gets clogged - if this happens always replace ( about £25 from Volvo). You will need to remove air mass meter for this. There is a snakes nest of pipes in this area for idle control. If engine doesn't run properly afterwards and wont idle check no pipes are off. Best of luck.

The box on the block does get clogged, and I have succcessfully cleaned 2 so far. Here's how I did it -

Use a screwdriver or similar to dig as much of the crud out as you can.
Blocking the holes with your fingers (a bit tricky, but it can be done) fill the box with degreaser and shake vigorously. You may need to do this a couple of times to completely clear it.
