Default Help: scratching sound (1.8 engine)!

I hear a metallic scratching sound near the alternator and pullies.
What can it be?

Dutchy, I think you shoud sell that V40 and buy one that doesn't vibrate, knock, squeek, rattle or scratch Only joking of course...

It could be the aux belt itself? How old or how many miles are on the belt?

I have a scratching noise coming from my cam/timing belt cover. When I apply pressure to the rear of the cover the noise stops. Must of upset the alignment of it when I had the top engine cover and brackets off.

And could also be as Stevo48 said...
