From the comments on here, I think it's a smart move by Mr Plod, as it seems the thinking is that unmarked Police cars are never White, or registered on a 'cherished plate'. So even more 'unmarked'.....

Excellent camouflage!!

And as to the expense, my similar layout reg, (letter, 3numbers, 3letters) cost me £399 from DVLA. Peanuts compared to the cost of 'police-prepping' a standard car, particularly as white is BMW's basic no-cost colour option.

I guess it is like wearing a hi-viz vest to blend in. When something becomes ubiquitous like wearing a hi-viz vest then, even though it is meant to make you stand out, you actually blend in......

My colleague has suggested it could be a voluntary paramedic. They can have blue light training and are then allowed to drive under blue lights. But they drive their own cars so reg could be theirs and maybe the 999 reflects what they do as a volunteer......

come to think of it, we had a customer who was a paramedic and they had a Volvo with 999 in the number plate

I've seen a couple of private plated cop cars in and around Lincolnshire of late... also they seem to have dropped the "police car no older than five years" mantra they had... the ones i've seen have been 02, 06, 10-plated.

MOT check shows that as a white 318d.... not suitable as a police car. More than likely a wannabe ambo or poss a fire brigade chap as they have lease cars fitted with bells n whistles.

Saw an unmarked white 3series Police car on the M180 this afternoon with the reg R999KAT.

Now I thought 2 things:-

1. Personalised plates are a vanity for people with more money than sense (I plead guilty).
2. Unmarked cars are supposed to be as anonymous as possible.

Thoughts?
This Reg now shows as a VOLVO XC90 SE AWD D5
