Default Water loss puzzled

52 ref V70 diesel auto 198k

Recently had the following problem

Get the low coolant warning

Check level ( hot) and wh'en removing the header tank cap get lots of hissing and bubbling and the level in the header tank rises to the max level.

Two days later same scenario.

temp gauge hits the middle and stays there

Heater whn put on top temp setting blows warm air only nothing like the 226 degrees requested

on squeezing the top hose it feels that there is no water in it, topping up the header tanks and squeezing doesn't make the level drop much, ( thinking it might be an airlock in the heater matrix)
Othe point that puzzles me is that after leaving it overnight, there is still a faier amount of pressure in the system.

There is no water in gthe oil nor emulsification on the filler

Any ideas on

1) cause of water loss

2) why it still has an amount of pressure when cold

First ti me this happened ( three years ago) One of those mobile fitters called and diagnosed a fubar head gasket. the Mrchanic at work suggested using a radwel typre thing ( forget the name) and it stopped........until now

Head gaskets don't just go on well maintained D5s.
Drain, flush water in all directions through all hoses and verify good flow in both directions. If you don't do this, don't waste your time doing the rest.

Refill and see where you stand then.

Maybe bite the bullet and get a new water pump - that was it on our 850. They have to be changed every 100k on our XC90 and we had to have it done (with both belts) this week by an excellent indy... :-) Hughie

Volvo water pumps are generally bullet proof & probably will outlast any aftermarket replacement. Personally, I would want to prove the pump was at fault before changing a perfectly serviceable item. I'd recommend a UV dye kit which you can pick up readily from ebay which will allow you to trace any external leaks. If you find none, then consider having a 'sniffer' test done to check for combustion gases in the coolant which would be indicative of head gasket, head or block leak.
