Water loss
Took my xc 70 d5 for a run today then up pops coolant low stop safely. it was down below minimum. only just fitted new water pump thinking that's where it losing water. had new genuine (supposedly) cap. I cant see where it going from are there any sneaky leaky places. temp was normal.

they may have left a few scraps of old gasket on there or scored the face removing gasket.
They may have not tightened one bolt fully Or the new pump may be a dud. Hope u get it sorted. Mine is losing water too - I will need to strip it and look in next few weeks |

I had a bugger of a leak just like this. No visible water under the car but after 100 miles or so it'd flash up low coolant....
Turned out to be a hose around the back of the engine had been rubbing and split. Impossible to see from the bonnet but I'm not sure how they missed it on the service a week before it started

Odour is always a good giveaway, that's how I found the PCV pipe heater leak on my D5.
There are any number of ways to find water loss sources, but if all else fails, you'll have to pressurise the system and then look to see where water falls out, as the leak may not be open at idle temperatures and pressures. Be very careful to not over-pressurise the system of course else you may find the leak that you create yourself. |

One weak point is where the plastic ends are crimped onto the ends of the radiator matrix. Normally you'll see a pale coloured trail of dried coolant around the leak.
You can get a UV dye kit which is very good to help trace external leaks. |

I had the same issue 18 months ago after a timing belt change, I had elected not to have water pump done. Eventually spotted the slow leak and sure enough it was emanating from the water pump area. 1 bottle of Holts Radweld later and the leak has never come back. Fingers crossed all will be ok until next timing belt change is due.

I have come across a few isolated cases where a replacement pump was not the same flange thickness as the original resulting in screws bottoming out and in some cases owner stripping threads trying to get the thing to seal.

Well I'm back after 8 days on holiday with my td5. so xc70 had stood at least 10 days and the water level had dropped even more. going to put her up on ramps tomorrow after work (self employed so wont be long)and see if can find some water leaks.

Today I left car running for about 20 mins then put on ramps spent an age underneath engine running and no visible leaks. engine must have been running a good 40 mins +. temp gauge in middle and notice water level in header tank had risen from full to the bottom of filler neck. back under bottom hose cold and bottom of rad cold. my thinking thermostat and/or radiator.
