Given there will probably be a lot of obstacles in the way, I'd go for the golf as it's small and agile.

Should we take emissions into account?

No....... Be it Zombies, Collapse of civilisation, Alien invasion etc My Mad Max style vehicle would not have a Euro Emmisions rating...... it's ok chaps, my 50 cal machine gun might be dangerous but my 504 pickup is good for the environment, no longer cool factor

The ignition system on a petrol engined vehicle may have been disabled by the nuclear detonation.

In reality that should only cause a problem for programmed microprocessors (where a memory is required or to put it another way a very simple form of software) as those found in ECU's, the rudimental timer chips in the fuel pump relay or the op-amp chip used in most hall effect sensor electronic ignition distributors would be in-effected as they are only really embedded transistors or multiples there of.

Sorry if that was too boring but I thought it best to help with accuracy.

A nuclear EMP will also effect old non-computerised vehicles. An EMP fills anything metallic with charges particles including things like ignition coils, mechanical distributors, generators and starting motors. Anything with a coil of wire that is insulated using enamel may breakdown as the heat from the charge has to go somewhere. The same with any capacitor or condenser, it is not the charge that gets them but the heat from the charge.

My 504 diesel pickup is king in that case

If it is diesel with a mechanical fuel pump and has a starting handle then it will work. Everything else depends on just how close it was to the blast. Your smartphone is going to be well fecked.

Yep, you can hand crank em. The 504 had an old Skool Diesel engine with a rotary pump so it's possible to crack it up without a battery. Pah to smart phones, there was a world before them.
