Hi Jason, i cannot argue at all with what Clan says as he is quoting Volvo. However, in my own car which is a 2006 S60 D5 185 bhp with the dreaded DPF i have been using Mobil 1 Fully Sythetic ESP formula which was especially developed for DPF vehicles.
It meets ALL A5/B5 requirements apart from being a 5w-30 rather than a 0w-30 as recommended.

Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 has been expertly engineered to help prolong the life and maintain the efficiency of Car Emission Reduction Systems in both diesel and gasoline powered automobiles.
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 exceeds the requirements of many leading industry and car manufacturers' standards required for newer
modern diesel and gasoline powered passenger car engines.
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 is made with a proprietary blend of leading edge components formulated to be fully compatible with the latest Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF's) and Gasoline Catalytic Converters (CAT's).
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 has been designed to deliver outstanding performance and protection in conjunction with improved fuel economy.

Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 has the following builder approvals:
BMW Longlife 04
MB-Approval 229.31/229.51
Volkswagen (Gasoline / Diesel) 504.00 / 507.00
Porsche C30
Chrysler MS-11106
Peugeot/Citroën Automobiles B71 2290, B71 2297
AvtoVAZ Group "Luxe"
AAE Standard STO 003-05, Group B6

Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 meets or exceeds the requirements of:
ACEA C2/C3
ACEA (Meets Engine Test Requirements) A5/B5 API (Meets Engine Test Requirements) SL / SM
JASO DL-1-08

My car is out of warranty and i have used this for the last 9000 miles without any trouble WHATSOEVER including DPF and Soot Full messages.

I have found a source for this at a great price (10 litres for £52 +£8.50 delivery ). It is usually £49 for 5 litres at most outlets including Halfords.

My car, my choice but i don't think i am taking much of a risk.

Darryl

I think I'm going to switch my 185 to Mobil 1 Fuel Economy 0W-30, it's an A5/B5 and much easier to get hold of than Castrol B5 spec stuff, cheaper too

I have been using Halfrauds own 5/30 A5/B5 oil in my 57 plate D5 SE Sport for some months now. Seems fine and costs about £35.00 for 7 litres with trade card. I believe Halfords oil is supplied by Comma anyway? Started using this oil at 120,000 miles and changing it every 10,000 miles. Done 5 changes with this oil now so presume must be okay!! Just changed to 166,000 miles today as pulled onto drive!!

In Volvo's current software manual - VIDA - and on a wall chart at my local dealer the oils listed are:

1) A5/B5 for a 18000 mile service interval and ONLY for EUROPEAN D5 engines.

2) If the same D5 engine runs in any other part of the world they recommend A3/B3/B4 and a 12000 mile service interval.

Spec is 0w/30 as required by the EU now to reduce friction and save on fuel.

Default Is Castrol MAGNATEC STOP-START wrong ?

I have just changed the oil in my 2006 V70 D5 and put Castrol MAGNATEC STOP-START 5/30 in it.
Have I done wrong? Should I replace it?

It should be castrol edge 0W/30 A5/B5 as it has to last 18000 miles, the finest you can get.
