under the bonett where the air filter is you will see a black flap lift that up and in there is a RED postive cable connect you batt charger or boost leads to that make sure you get a good earth. then use your remote to open the boot.

you can use any good earth points in the engine bay. doing that will at least get you in the boot area. you need to check the battery to see if its holding charge and also there maybe something causing it to discharge. check the battery first

There have been a few stories of these batteries just dying, rather than the expected gradual reduction in output.
My 2001 V70 did exactly this 5 years ago, I replaced the battery, and did it again to my buddy who bought it from me 3 months ago.
No warning, just died.

Not sure a bout the V70, but the S60 has a little rubber cover next to the 'handle' on the boot lid which covers the key lock. So the boot can be unlocked without battery power.

My V70 has no key lock on the outside of the tailgate.

I do see an ~1" diameter, flat area on the tailgate to the right of the license plate area and the opening handle which looks like a knockout plug. This is seen only from below. I think that part of the kit for the extra pair of seats in the cargo area is a handle on the inside and key lock on the outside.

Perhaps if one knew what he was doing he could knock out this plug and manipulate the lock. Or maybe it is designed so that a suitable hole is drilled with a keyhole saw on an electric drill. Then one could use a rubber plug in the hole. It goes without saying that this would only be done in the event that the electric lock could not be made to work.
