Default Grating/chafing noise coming from the rear..try this

Had the V70 almost six months now. Recently an annoying sound from the rear has been heard everytime it went round corners/over bumps/anything that would flex the car. It wasn't a metallic noise, more of a plastic rubbing noise.
To cut a long story short, I took out the spare wheel and casing (polystyrene) to see if that was the cause. It wasn't. I took out the luggage cover, the nets, pressed panels, felt behind panels - you name it I did it but with no success.
Then I sussed it - where the tailgate lock catches the grease had worn off! Simple really but I didn't realise the noise a tiny amount of grease could supress. So, if anyone suffers a similar fate, always check the lock first - it may save you days of frustration!

Approx 25 years ago bought a 245GLT and the rear fog lights would not work.

Spent hours resolving it. I stripped the lot
  • clusters
  • dash
  • switch
  • bulbs
  • etc

Eventually, read the owners manual.

Apparently on these "new" cars, the headlights need to be on in order for the rear foglights to function.

Nowadays I follow the KISS principle - Keep It Simple Stupid!

Years ago my company car was a Renault Laguna. These were the days before mobile phones and so I had a car phone fitted. A week after purchase there was quite a bit of road noise heard - more than when I collected it. It went back and forth to the Renault garage and they were mystified. After a trip out with the senior mechanic he agreed that something wasn't right and could he have the car in the workshop for a few days to try to work it out. He couldn't but he came to the conclusion that the gearbox bearings were the problem and a new gearbox was fitted (remember the car was less than 3 weeks old!). Drove off the forecourt - same noise.

Car went back in for another 4 days. Eventually an embarrassed call was received telling me the problem had been found. Whoever had fitted the car phone had to drill through the passenger bulkhead to pass a wire through and they had forgotten to put a rubber seal in! Road noise just came through a tiny hole. A bit of sealant did the job.

The senior mechanic wasn't worried - apparently Renault pay good money to a garage for warranty work!
