Great write up, did you have to remove the airbox to top up ?

Default Thanks

I removed the air box and removed the Maf sensor and housing from the air box cover (two torx screws same size as the air box cover handily enough) and reattached it to the air inlet hose where it would sit normally thus allowing me to connect the electrical sensor cable. I just didn't fancy having any warning lights on starting her up without Maf sensor cable connected. This meant I had all the space I needed! Yes it meant unfiltered air, but for a few minutes at a time, no issues. I suppose I could have attached a piece of cloth to the end of the Maf housing and used an elastic band to keep it over the end to act as a temporary filter. Next time perhaps. I travelled to London and back from Yorkshire, it was silky cog changes all the way. So far so good with Mannol ATF JWS 3309, 528 miles since job done.

I've been researching this issue to ensure that the T6 i've just picked up will continue to be as great as it is now!

75k on the clock FSH.

One forum i read suggests that '03 T6 doesn't use/need to use JWS 3309 ATF - but that i can use Dexron III...

1- Can anyone clarify that's the case?
2- T6 4 speed box is made from chocolate so i should do this ASAP.

cheers,

Default Mannol ATF JWS 3309

Hi I don't know anything about the petrol model gearboxes, other than there are tad bit more delicate. I'm sure someone far cleverer than me will post a reply. This thread was really all about a cheaper alternative to Volvo, Mobil 1, Toyota JWS 3309 rated oil which by all accounts are the same thing.
But I deinately advocate a transmission oil change at this age and mileage in the T6 to put your mind at rest.
Good luck.

Default Transmission Fluid

I have used this successfully on a MY01 petrol XC. I would not use Mobile1 it is no longer 3309 because the original specification is based on a mineral oil base and Mobile changed their's to fully synthetic. No matter what you use it is important to have a working Vida+DiCE and reset the counter in the TCM, so that the modules knows the condition of the fluid, since it makes adjustments to the way the transmission changes based on the age and condition of the fluid. For the same reason, the adaptions should be run. My experience of doing this multiple times that resetting the adaptions is not as easy as described in Vida.

IIRC Mannol is also a synthetic base. I remember a debate on UKSaabs going to and fro some years ago, so I emailed Mannol UK in MK.

It meets the spec., syth or mineral.

I then plan do a sump n dump every 10k with the engine oils n filter changes. This way there will be relatively newish oil in the transmission at any one time (and the engine too of course). Had 20 litres on Mannol JWS3309 to play with. Decided to go for full flush with Gibbons method and had purchased the pipe and spare green clip with o rings.

Sump plugs off, got 3.2 litres. With previous 2 sump n dumps drains 2.2 and 2.7 l. Can anyone explain why the difference, I drained the box in my garage on all three occasions?

Anyway, I replaced the dropped oil, then replacing drain plugs. I flushed through a total of 16l including the first sump n dump. The oil looked new coming up so I couldn't justify further flushing. I did move through all the gears on 3 of the pumps outs. I was not convinced this made any difference ie a sudden ejection of dirty oil. Any comments on this?

I replaced exactly what I drained, carefully measuring losses. Once I replaced filler bolt I let engine run for 15 mins to allow new oil to warm up in the box - do you think that was enough? I opened the level plug with engine running and about 100mls of warm (but not hot) oil flowed out before it dripped at which point I tightened up the bolt.

I took Betty for a 15 mile ride and boy, she was silky smooth. I can not thank the folk on these forums enough. Without the wealth of knowledge on these forums, Volvo garages (and Indies) across the nation would be pocketing our hard earned cash. If I can do this task, anyone can. I'm a ordinarily a Medic not a Mechanic! Do it! And keep your transmission boxes running!

One thing I did notice, on starting the engine for first time after the level check, on selecting reverse to exit my garage, the traction control warning light illuminated, but then went after I selected D to move on forwards , and has remained off. Any ideas? All fine and dandy now.
From one chuffed Doc!

Ps I will update how I get on with Mannol transmission oil. By all accounts all should be fine. Still can't believe the cost saving!

Good work Kaz. Nice write up.

I use the Mannol myself on my AW-55 and TF-80 D5's and mixed it with genuine no problem.

I'm no expert, but your plan of a sump dump every 10k along with your regular service is exactly what I do. You've got the undertray off anyway, so only adds 1/2hr to the job.

Maybe an investment in VIDA would be good so you can set the level accurately and reset the transmission counter. VIDA is just a great toy to have anyway for lots of reasons!
