Default Removing Steering Wheel Amazon

Right ive come accross a slight issue.

My steering wheel is stuck on.

Ive removed the nut tried banging on the back to remove it with no joy.
Ive used penitrating oil on the splines. No Joy.
Ive tried pulling it off and bent the puller doing so and possibly damaged the threads in the wheel.

Any other options before i start heating it up to try and remove it.

Other question is how easy are parts available for the column if i make a complete hash of it and has anyone converted to a rack instead of a box?

P.S. To remove the complete dash is it remove all screws and its as simple as that?

I screwed up a puller years ago and made my own. If you can still get something into the puller holes, then take a bit of 3/8"x2" flat bar (steel). Drill two holes in it that are the same distance apart as the puller holes. Thread two bolts through the holes and into the wheel. The bar should now span over the top of the steering column. By adjusting the number of washers under the bolt heads, you can tighten the bolts down, pulling the steering wheel free. If this doesn't make sense, let me know and I can post a photo of mine. It works better than any commerical puller I have seen.

If it's completely wrecked, I think I have a steering column or two about. What car is it in? If it's an Amazon, is it the earlier style (no jog in it) or later one (did the RHD cars get the later one or was that only a LHD thing for the US crash testing)?

It does make sense but im worried about damaging the column thread as the holes in the wheel get covered by that nut to make the area larger.

Ill try again using a thicker bar and drill into it. Hopfully that will let it go.

According to the haynes book if lies you remove the nut and tap with your hands from behind to remove it lol.

It is in a amazon and im hoping i wont damage the column as it would be nice to keep the original one in there.

Default steering wheel removal

copious oil overnight then a sharp tap to the surround around the thread (as if you are putting it further down.)It freed mine up and i was able to then shake it about a bit and it came off

I think the puller holes are far enough apart that you can have the nut on the threads of the column to protect them. But with the flat bar, flat against the end of the column, it should spread the load out evenly over that area. But then again, the nut might be a good idea if you are really having to pull that force on things to get it apart.

If you find an old established dealer or a specialist they'll probaly have a puller. If the car is in bits pour a kettle of boiling water over the hub of the steering wheel. It'll expand enough to pop it off.

I usually leave the nut on loosly(so when the wheel comes loose it doesnt smack you in the mouth!)and grippimg the wheel by the spokes pull like hell whilst rocking it slightly from side to side.A few short burst of extreme effort have always worked for me,but maybe I am just lucky!

lol, speaking from experience i see? i once did that in public, at a Mini Meet years ago, when swapping out the stock bus size wheel for a 2nd hand 13" wheel in the display area...

looked like a right plank walking around with a big lump on my forehead...

good luck to the OP pulling his off...

Nope i broke it.

Tried every method here Heat, oil, puller

Puller ended up completly stripping the threads in the wheel and when i went to retap its snapped my tap inside it.

No way its coming off. Even with heat and puller with me swinging off it it wont budge.

Good old volvo engineering lol.

So im on the lookout for a wheel and top part of the column, the surround would be nice too as someone seems to have butchered mine around the indicator stalk.

Heres what it looks like... bad picture i know but i cant face going back outside to see it.

Double edit. Just found one on ebay that im now watching as somone is breaking a amazon.

Does anyone know what thread size bolts are required, only I though I had the right ones but ended up chewing some alloy.
