Checking steering pump health after ripped belt
Was driving on the highway, heard some whipping noises in the engine bay.
When i took an exit to check the sound, the power steering was gone. Turned out the belt was shredded . Ive been extremely lucky that it didnt caught the cam belt, checked the alternator, steering pump and the pulleys which all seemed fine. This surprises me , yes happy that the damage is maximum contained to the belt. But i expected the belt to rip because of a stuck pully alternator or steering pump(aircon pump wasnt used and free)because 50000 km and 5 years is way to early to rip a belt. It was a gates belt are there any other brands with solid track records? And is the steeringpump to be checked on damage? it runs smooth but with a slight click noise if you reverse the direction of the pulley |

May have stretched and been slipping quietly now and again. With the heat from regens our components probably have a hard life under there. All my compact V6 petrol cars suffered from heat damage to components wiring etc.
Wonder how hot our regen diesels are in comparison? Continental belts are pretty good and a bit more expensive. All my belts are due renewal and I think Volvo belts will be on the shopping list. Gates have been good for me on many cars, but batch faults can occur I suppose. |

Got a new belt today, its a gates again, they had no other brands.
It was a pain to replace, very very tight fitting (more tight than the last one). But it seems to work as it should again, steering pump also has no damage. But the slapping belt had made a mess of the sound insulation besides the belt and a hole in the cap around the belt over the steering pump. And i noticed very small belt parts in the groves of the steering pump pulley. Are there any material differences between the cam belt and serpentine belt? What is the official replacing interval of these belts? Last edited by 5cilinder; Jun 25th, 2022 at 20:03. |

Plottwist:
The belt was ripped by the sagging cambeltcover......it was sagging because i opened a few weeks ago to check the condition of the cambelt. The m10 bolt goes through a rubber bus...wich can be moved over the bolt! the belt was split in half and ripped...took a few weeks tho . Also there are 2 belt numbers in vida for 2 series chassis ranges which are 2 lengths of belts 1825 mm and 1841 mm .... Mine needed the 1841mm but i ordered the 1825mm which explains the difficult initial fitting . Now after usage it can be moved easier... and the tensioner still has room to tension so there is room to move either direction... Fitting the longer belt on the shorter route would be more problematic |
