That is what I am hoping!

My theory is that the failed EGR system around the same time as low oil top warnings might be the reason for a blocked PCV depending on the position it fails in. I am thinking they are related.

Aslong as the seals are not damaged or blown I don’t see why they wouldn’t be sufficient. All comes down to time and cost as well.

I am still mythed by my burning and smoke. Hasn’t happened at all over 90 miles today and have booked in for 2 recalls next week so hoping it was a one off and just residual oil but only time will tell

I need help!

They are advising that positive pressure out of the filler cap is normal (its very significant). They are telling me that they need to strip down the valve cover to investigate.......I really don't think its necessary and about £700.

Can anyone advise? Clan do you have any ideas what could be at fault? The PCV box / separator? 4 pipes leading to it?

Maybe you have posted this earlier, but has your car had all the checks done with regards to the inlet manifold, EGR valve etc?

Some people seem to have noted loss of oil as one of the symptoms associated with the damage caused to the inlet valves...

Has the pressure test been done?

Oil leaks / loss started around the same time as the EGR problem Feb time. It went in for the EGR work and I reported oil leak at that time. They did EGR work FOC and stated oil leak was minor.

A pressure test has not been done.

My lack of trust comes from big number costs being quoted before they even looked at the car.

I do not have any visible smoke out of the exhaust.

Are there any owners that can check if they have positive pressure out of the filler cap on their VEA D4 (mine is a 2014)?

Or is this a red herring?

Hi gillypop, I've just checked my 67 plate VEA D4 (33k miles). Engine was warm after a run, removed filler cap and noticed some slight misting/fumes, then placed a scrumpled paper towel over the filler hole.
The paper towel vibrated up and down over the hole but was not pushed aside or upwards, it just hovered over the hole as if in a balanced situation.

I conclude there is no net pressure from the filler hole.

Hope this helps.

Chris

I would ask for the pressure test to be done before anything else. On my car they only stripped the head after the pressure test failed.

If they want to look at valves it may very well be the case that your engine has sooted up following EGR failure.

I am cutting my losses for now and picking the car up. They are adamant that positive pressure out of the filler cap is normal.

I will do a check that Clan has suggested and take it from there with a view to using a volvo specialist and talking directly with a mechanic rather than a middle man.

Thanks all and I will update when I get to the bottom of the problem.

I have just checked mine for you which is D4 57k 2015 and the pressure is pretty balanced, ie fluctuation of air moving in and out. Some light oil smoke/fumes were also about and I have tried this warm and cold just to double check. I wouldn’t be inflating any gloves put it that way. Also I would presume that you would only really have a negative pressure if the revs were upped?
