When I bought my 960 the horn[s] didn't work.Once I'd found out where they lived I found that a previous owner had fitted a triple horn air horn on which the pump had packed up.I bought a pair of snail horns[one high one low] off E-bay for just over £6 the pair and fitted those,no problems so far.

I fitted some Hella SuperTones to mine, about £30, and mounted them behind the grille so anyone I beep at certainly knows they’ve been beeped at!!

I recently fitted a pair of new 'hooters' on my '90 745 and, on recommendation used these off eBay for £15.99 for the pair. Better price than £34 each from Volvo. Delivery was on time, I am satisfied with them and attach a photo of them as arrived. See:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Horn-Mot-...72.m2749.l2649

The original UK importer is a firm called 'Simply' you can find them on the internet.

They are virtually identical to the original Bosch ones except the connectors are not the same (Bosch special-push on-v-standard Lucar). You have to chop the original connectors off and replace with insulated Lucar spades . However, if you can get the original Volvo connectors to separate you will be VERY lucky!

I took the opportunity to make up a new length of loom and to move the horns inside the engine bay on to vacant studs below the header tank that were originally intended for an accessory.

Also see my original thread: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=297304

Best of luck,

Bob

After replacements lasted just six months mounted in the original position (it was very wet down there on occasiion) I fitted a pair of cheap air horns behind the grille, with the air pump mounted above the battery behind the nearside headlamp. My reasoning was that the horns could get wet and still work.

The horns on my 240 are working, so far. I know because I check them at least every year before the MOT.

I would be very interested in alternative replacements IF they could be relied upon to :
  • Give a serious warning of advance ONLY when actually necessary, and
  • Give a gentle friendly toot when appropriate.

Any recommendations?

Please?

.

I didn’t like the peep peep toad of Toad of Toad Hall horns on my 940 when I acquired it back in 2005. I obtained a pair of wind tone horns from a Volvo in a breakers. I’ve replaced them twice since then with more from a breaker. Once from a V40 and lately from an S40 I think it was. They appear to have been fitted to various Volvo models over the years.
