1994 onwards cars should be pre-wired for the external temperature gauge. If the sender is missing from the donor car then they should be readily available as they were used across a range of Volvo cars.
http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts...ature/1013534/ Some cars, I think 960s, used a black connector on the actual gauge which is not directly compatible with the white connector on 940s. |

I'll just need to have a good hunt around as I can only assume it's been tucked away somewhere

It might have dropped out of it's socket. the wiring for the sensor comes from the same part of the loom as the horns. Have a look under the the car on the front nearside. It might be hanging there.

I'll have another look tonight. As I mentioned the horns or horn ( think there is one ) are positioned behind the passenger side headlight on this car rather than underneath as on my 96 car. As you rightly say it must be hanging somewhere for the internal gauge to be working

Sorted
Popped over to breaker car tonight and traced the wires from the horn which is mounted behind the passenger side headlight and found the little blighter ( sensor ) tucked in behind the bumper crash tube thingy's
Checked my car when I got home and found the wiring and the plug that the sensor goes into all neatly cable tied up next to the horns. All I need to do now is get my binnacle out without breaking the metal surround like I did in the breaker car

I'm looking at an aftermarket version that includes a voltmeter but not sure if it'll fit without pulling my instruments out - would you be kind enough to measure the width x height of the display module please?

just like the sensor cable tucked back...the binnacle cable and plug is taped similar, just backwards facing the bulkhead of the dash harness, that's where mine was on my '95 my.
