2002 XC70 - Transfer Case Issue

Hiya,

I've got a 2002 2.4T XC70 petrol/manual and have got a bit of an issue. It's developed a whine (in and out of gear) starting at about 30mph, increasing in pitch with speed.

I've had a local indy look at it and they suspect that the noise is coming from the transfer case(box?). Anyway both the garage and I have been on the lookout for a used transfer case for a few weeks now and we're having no joy.

I just wanted to ask if anyone else had a similar experience finding a used one and also given I'm still using the car daily what's likely to happen if the issue deteriorates? Also are there any alternatives to replacing the case/box?

it depends if the noise is from the gear or the bearings , it will be the gear if it has been leaking and lost the oil , bearings are pretty easy to replace ...
