Hi, in my experience, you need to get a new key from your local Volvo garage and have it programmed to the car. For security reasons this has to be so.

A broken key, such as a broken spring can be fixed, but with delicate surgery to remove the transponder and key itself and transpose into as new assembly you can purchase from such as eBay. The physical key and fob are in two parts.

You can remove the part with the buttons easily.. You can purchase a blank key part into which you have to fit your old transponder and key part. This blank key part can be opened easily and will have a new spring, whereas the old key needs delicate hands to open up. There are YouTube videos on how to do this. You can then fit a new spring and glue back together. If you want to use the new key part, you have to try and remove the transponder chip from the old part which is delicate.

The part with the buttons can be ordered also as an empty case. I changed mine as the loop that attached to a key ring was broken.

But if you simply want a new key both the transponder and I believe the transmitter need programming to your car.

You may get a better deal from differing Volvo garages, or buy a new unprogrammed key and have it programmed by Volvo, but know from losing one of mine that it is not cheap!

Hope this helps, John l

Unhappy its pricey

If you have the old key, change the transponder, (Its like a glass grain of rice) into a new shell, it can be a pain to get out, I cut one out as far as possible with a junior hacksaw then cleaned it up using a knife heated on the gas ring. The plastic just scraped off the transponder easily with the hot knife.
Cost will be under £10.

If you need to code a new key it has to be a dealer. The keys I understand can only be coded once so no chance of using a second hand one from another car. You will also need proof of ownership, and not an inconsiderable wad of cash, about £300 I understand which is pretty standard for most cars.
