I think as others have alluded sometimes small mistakes like an incorrectly mounted handle might seem trivial but could point to someone who does not know the cars very well. The steering wheel could be deliberate - a lot of people seem to like the earlier wheel, although I'd have thought if someone was selling they'd go original.

A few dealers seem to be getting it into their heads that these cars are now worth a lot of money. Top restorations rightly go for a lot since they are lovely cars and not cheap to do the body properly, but be wary of people trying to ride that without putting the work in. The ES is also worth a bit less than the coupe but just as expensive to restore, so perhaps another reason to be wary.

Simon, as you rightly say there are a lot of knowledgeable owners on here who will willingly give advice for free, keep us informed of what you find if and when you view this ES.

If you decide to go for it, enjoy the car, mine still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.

Good Luck.

Decision made for me: before the lockdown allows and I’ve been able to get out and see it the cars been sold. Are people buying unseen? Or are they flouting the lockdown rules? Either way it’s their choice, neither suit me.
Thanks everyone for your invaluable input, as a novice purchaser you’ve given me plenty of guidance. I remain very committed to finding the right car, so I’ll keep looking and hopefully in the next few weeks I’ll be able to get out to view the cars.

Oh well there will be others.

I follow the classic market a bit and I think buying unseen is becoming more common and accepted - even before Covid various specialist auction sites were appearing that post around 200 pictures and lots of videos, description etc. They claim to sell about 80% of cars unseen, even high value ones. It is also becoming more common for regular dealers to post loads of pictures and the expectation as a buyer is to be provided with a lot more information remotely.

A few people probably are breaking the rules in private sales, but I don't get the impression it is particularly widespread. People after higher value concourse cars (which very good P1800s now count as) are probably sending in professional inspectors / trusted experts, who presumably are still allowed to go about their business.

I think the days of travelling hours to see something on the basis of grainy classified only to find that you and the seller have wildly different understandings of what 'stunning' or 'collector quality' mean are thankfully on their way out.
