Can you extract some fluid to determine what's in it?

He doesn’t mean the cap, he means the fluid. There are Esther based fluids and others which are not compatible.

If you remove the black cap and remove a very small amount of fluid (use a pipett or failing that you may be able to use a clean lint free cloth) dip the fluid and it should come out green (I should imagine on your year) or red.

Are you sure that you are upto doing this job given the number of questions you have asked. I don’t mean to be rude but it’s not hard to introduce an air lock which you have to bleed out etc or to contaminate the fluid with dust etc (which will shred the seals).

My advice to someone who does not realise that power steering fluid coming in couloured format and asks these many questions is to not undertake the action and to have it done by a garage at your next service. It will probably cost you £25 all in. Bleeding the rack can be a work up and if you fit the wrong fluid or introduce debris to the system you will damage the seals which is a subframe dropping excercise to replace the rack. That’s a £1,000 plus job at a garage or some serious skill in the drive.

If you are going to do it order the fluid from Volvo direct.

I'd be for pulling out the fluid in the reservoir only, use the car for a few days/week then do the same again. Job done.

Sorry no I meant if you undo the cap and look underneath. What colour is the seal

Chances are if you look at a sample it'll probably be brown depending on previous maintenance

from my understanding most post 1999 vehicles are (or should) be using the CHF (green) stuff?

i would like to get this done today, and about to collect some of this. if someone could confirm if this is suitable for my car, would be much appreciated.

That is what I use in my S60 of exactly the same vintage, and used to use on my XC70 of the same year, both D5s.

Forums are great

I ask because I find a lot of conflicting advice, and I had to replace a leaky pipe yesterday, i sucessfully did that and bled the system.

the fluid that's currently inside is very dirty, just brown, to be honest i cant tell what colour it was originally... and just seemed like a sensible next step to replace it, i was going to do it the easy way, by just replacing the fluid in the reservoir.

Probably, like I suspect happened to mine, it was green then someone topped up with red
