Newbie with problems....
Hi guys, have just wandered from the exciting world of an Alfa Romeo (still have it) to the more sensible/reliable Volvo
Found myself a "tidy" looking S40 115bhp diesel on Friday and got it for next to nothing but of course there are some issues which I expected except one in particular but ill get to that later. First problem is that the car pulls slightly to the left and does quite a bit of vibrating after you pass 50mph. Now having an Alfa has given me some clues as to what this could be, first off the front tyres are in at the legal limit so new tyres are on the way and then ill track it to see if the pulling and vibration goes away. Second the car vibrates badly when slowing down so Im guessing warped discs. Third, the heated seats arent working at all, the lights go on but nothing. Connections underneath seem ok and intact. The reverse lights only work occasionally and ive replaced the bulbs to see if that was the cause but no. The radio doesnt want to find any radio stations, the antenna is plugged into the back of it but I found another antenna type connection in the boot which isnt connected. Not sure where this goes. Now the most interesting problem... the AC. I was looking through the engine bay and noticed that one of the AC pipes (on the left hand side) just ends and a small rag covering the holes. I looked on the net and it shows that the pipe needs to come near the power steering pump reservoir towards the bulkhead near the power steering pump and then disappears behind the rad but in my car that pipe is not there at all!!! Its a big list but one im willing to tackle although the AC one worries me. Apart from that the engine bay is clean, pulls very well and has no blind spots. I know its a long list but can anyone help me? Thank you and hope to get to know you all Kevin |

The cable in the boot not connected to anything, is it black and circular? If so, after investigating my own radio issues, someone pointed out to me it is probably the connector for the CD multi-changer.
I have yet to solve my radio issue. But general consensus is it is likely to be an aerial fault. Does the aerial retract fully? |

Hi and welcome to the forum Kevin.
With regards to the steering, new wheels and proper tracking is the right way to go. Vibrations at speed: Raise car and check wheels for any play. Reverse lights: Most probably the reversing lights sensor in the gearbox Do you have any photos of the antenna connector and the AC pipe?

Mine also vibrated a lot when slowing. It was only rear driver side doing it. Replaced discs and pads and the problem has gone.
If you are comfortable replacing brake parts yourself, you can get mintex pads and discs from ebay for about £38. Can't really help with the other issues, sorry. |

Hi thanks for the welcome
At the moment I dont have any photos, Ill take some tomorrow if I can find that bloody Nokia connector and upload them. If it helps there is absolutely no play in the steering wheel so at least I know the rack is good. Ive been doing some more digging RE: the heated seats and it seems that if the lights go on then the fuse is fine and it looks like the modules are at fault which would require new seats Would the reversing sensor on the box be difficult to replace? |

It's not that hard. It is located under the gearbox mount. You need to remove the battery, battery tray, air filter box, support the gearbox and undo the mount.
This is the AC hose you need. See photo I am breaking a 2003 1.9D atm, so if you are interested in any of the parts, let me know

reversing light switch is a bit of a pain, you have to remove the gear box mounting and jack gearbox/engine up to support it. the switch is located under the mounting.

Yep thats the AC pipe that is missing. Exactly where the yellow line you have drawn starts is where my AC pipework ends ffs.
Looking at your engine layout Im more curious as when I tried to locate where the pipe leads to (near the bulkhead) I could only see the alternator and not the AC comp. Is it hard to see or am I looking in the wrong direction? |

It goes to the AC compressor which is exactly below the alternator.
