Default My Rattly Knocking Noise v40d 115

Hi there everyone I have had a few problems with a rattly knocking noise from the front drivers side (I believe) for over a year now. the worse time to hear this noise is slow bumpy or potholed roads lower than 20mph (roughly) when it sounds like a potato rattling around in a tin can you can feel something is not right also and been bugging me for ages and I just keep throwing money at it.
What I have changed already; Front drop links, Arb bushes, Top mounts, Bearings, Bump stops and the Shock absorbers (only thing not changed from the assembly is the cup that sits on top of the spring to hold it and the spring itself).

It went through an MOT with the knock I told them it had one cause I thought they might find it thats when I changed the drop links but it didnt cure the problem I think the next thing is the track rod ends before the lower arms could it be something else. Thanks Tim
p.s. I might post a video if that would help

Ball joints, wishbone bushes could be something to look at, although ball joints are noticeable when turning full lock.

yeah I would have thought m.o.t. tester would have given these a good checking and prying but I guess I will do the ball joints on the track rod or just straight up replace the wishbones.
Not sure how easy it is to press in the wishbone bushes or EuroCarParts were showing a lemforder part has anyone fitted 1 of these

Not had to ever fit wishbones haha, but then again the p bushes in the wishbone could be making the noise, I know of no way to test it though except hearing it when driving.

I also have a knocking noise, coming from the rear lol. Time to rip that apart soon

Default Replacement

These are a seriously easy thing to replace. I can usually do them in about 45mins each side from start to finish. I would recommend getting the tracking checked after its done. I would also recommend replacing both as if one has gone the other is probably going.

TimmyTarmac, what you've described is exactly the sound I get from the drivers side when doing the same low speed and/or over a bumpy surface. Also there is a distinctive clunk when selecting 'D' or 'R'. Is yours an auto box?

My local garage knew about it when they did the MOT recently and said it was the offside inner CV joint that had wear in it, but it didn't make it fail the test!

Default p bushes in the wishbone

Hi these p bushes I assume you mean track rod ends?
If it is the track rod ends that need replacing I would do both sides and def get the tracking done also gazzer.

Saurmboy my car is a manual but I assume cv joints would be the same so could still be causing my problem O yeah I changed drivers outer C.V. last year as thought this could have been my problem but no. I dont get a clunk putting the car in gear but I do get a thud if I put my foot hard down on the motorway around 50 60 miles an hour.

Thanks for the replies been away over the weekend so couldn't reply

also turning the steering wheel vigarosly from the middle to the right whilst going around 5-10 miles an hour seems to trigger the knock (hard to do and drive in straight line) the neighbours must think im drunk lol

"potato rattling around in a tin can" is definitely not my noise, mine is more "potato rolling in a wooden box"

More of these awesome analogies please!

Thankfully mine doesn't seem to affect handling so I'm not too fussed about it.

Tin can or wooden box they probably do have a similar sound (I didn't test this noise before the post) but mine has got worse especially after changing firming up the rest of the suspension or I am just more annoyed by it and noticing it more.
Not sure if my handling is affected as I think I have always the noise, my wheel mite fall off next week I don't know. It really doesn't sound good.

I think I will change the track rod ends If it doesn't go Ill pay out and take it to a garage for some diagnosis
