Default D24Tic conversion to a S/V70 Tdi engine

Hi all,
I was wondering if this is possible to a conversion on an existing 7/940 diesel car?
I'm not sure if the existing gearbox will attach to the engine without modification.....I'm thinking bolt pattern, clutch space, if it would be ok. I have looked on line but haven't seen this conversion done before.
What do you think?

I've seen it done before to a 940

I would have thought the bolt pattern etc would be the same.

Question is though - why?? D24s are awesome, you'd have to change your signature too!!

Seriously though, the D5252s are brilliant engines, really good on fuel compared to a d24 and 140bhp in standard trim isn't to be sniffed at.

They do make a nice growl too, I keep trying to convince a mate to sell me his 888 Special Transporter with the same engine (not intercooled, but would be if I had it!)

They respond well to a remap too

Just wiring them up would be a ball ache, and they have to be dynamically timed too, no "that's about right" when setting a D5252 pump!

having both engines in the household, really i dont understand why either. the 5252t is a lot worse to work on, you need a computer for a lot of things, and i think not really much more capable when you consider how easy it is to make a d24 make more power. also, i'm only getting 2mpg less than our 5252t powered v70 on average at the moment!

think it would be a great swap dont get me wrong, but only if there was no way of carrying on with the smoother, nicer sounding, and more moddable d24! also, if you were going to go as far as sorting all the wiring for a d5252t then why not just use a whiteblock M90 and a D5? seems like a much more logical swap given they make a better noise, make more power standard than a remapped d5252t, and are more efficient too?

just my tuppence worth, and jsut to show i'm not all negative, i had considered this very swap before i got the d24 in

Default 5 pot vs 6 pot

Ive had 3 six cylinder and 2 five cylinder engines, both have ther own merits and both very good engins. Things that are influential are that the D24's are now a rear car to get hold of, esp on that has been looked after. If the 5 pot could bolt up to a M90 D24 the rest should be fairly easy one hopes. Regarding the wiring, that may be left to someone that knows what they are doing......ie not me!
Thing is, ive my heart set on a flat front 740 saloon in good shape but they are not available. I could sacrifice a diesel 940 to convert a petrol 740.......or go the other extreem and do 960 or S90..... like someone here... ;-)

Default S90/960 conversion

Now that would be a hybrid car, S90 with d24 prop, gearbox and five pot diesel engine.
When converting your 960, did you run into issues with the rear suspension/axle?
What were the things to look out for when converting yours?

The engine itself bolted straight up using 940td mounts and gearbox crossmember.

Can't remember off hand, but think I may have used half of each prop without problem.
Maybe even the 960 prop bolted up, have a read through my project thread

Then it was just a case of making up a simple engine loom.

Air filter and ABS unit are the wrong way round on a 960, but I just used a cone filter and did away with the huge air box.

A 760td exhaust works well and does away with the diesel cat if fitted to the donor.

I wired a constant ignition feed to the in tank fuel pump to help the mechanical pump so.it doesn't have to lift

Default D24 is the way to go!

Thanks for that, now I rem viewing your thread but I cant find it....can you post up a link.
Now the good news is that I think I found a donor car.......940 with an auto box but I also have the option of a M90 manual..... :-)
So now is the choice is to find a car to put it in..... 740 saloon or a 960/S90?

theres a really really nice looking 88 740 gle saloon on ebay at the moment, has some engine issues i think and is missing it's door cards, but other than that looks to be very clean and straight, and has all the GLE bells and whistles too

i'll try and find a link
