5ltrs was just enough to do my XC90 today. It was filthy. My power steering tank only holds just under 500ml, so it took a bit longer than I expected.

The stuff in it now is green, though a little darker than what comes out the bottle new. Ill run it a week and do another 2 flushes or so.

I used a syphon kit to get it out.

Better than getting that nasty stuff in my gob using a pipe.

If you siphon correctly, no fluid goes near your mouth.

5 litres?! 4 x 500ml drain and fills remove 93% of old fluid.

Were you turning the wheels under load after filling and before draining?

Hi Simon.

I can't be trusted with things in my mouth, I just know ill die by using my super suction powers !

Apologies, 4 ltrs not 5 ! (I've just read my receipt)

Yes I was turning the steering wheel in between fills. full locks, 8-10 times. When you say under load, I just turned the steering wheel (wheels where on top of plastic bags as in your vid), I didn't dwell at full lock to long at either end. Maybe I should have ?

Before the last change, i went for a drive (to pick up one more litre of CHF). Now its the proper green colour, with a slight dark tinge. It definitely needs doing once or twice more, to get the bright green colour back.

Ive used 3 full 1lts bottles and have 400ml left (4 in total). That old stuff must have been real nasty.

Fair enough.
I can only assume that the old fluid was particularly grim and coating everything but it's slowly but surely being "rinsed" off with the new.

Keep going and once it's properly bright green like new, it will stay that way with minimal further changes.
A litre every couple of years should see you right long term.

Agreed Simon. It was very very bad. So bad, it was causing my lumpy left turn steering to bounce. Sweet as now.

Ive done one more flush this morning. Its green coming out, with time micro bubbles in it causing it to look darker. Ill revisit it in a few weeks and see how it is.

Woah!!

After reading this post, thought I'd check mine only done 65k 2010 reg. Thought, well, it might not be too bad...

Checked the dip stick... Yes a Cold level and a hot level ... it wasn't even registering on the dipstick and engine was hot!! What fluid IS in there looks black and dirty (at least there is some fluid still in)

So just ordered a siphon kit and 2 litres of CHF11s pentosin... interesting that the price on Amazon is less than opie oils and yet the oil is actually despatched from Opie oils... hmmm

Thanks to Colinbos and Cheshired5 as usual :-)

I can't take the credit on this job, its all Cheshired5's (We're not worthy)

Make sure you check out his Vid on YouTube on the job - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DjUmy4prx4

I bought 2 litres at first as well, not such luck on that amount for me. Mine was very dark brown. I did end up using 4ltrs (and I have opened a 5th just to top it up). My steering has been revitalised. No more hydraulic knock when turning left. I believe my engine idles better too (maybe because the power steering pump isn't laboured, or placebo)

I hope your motor factors is as near as mine, cos you'll hate when you need more. !

Though, Its fine to do it, and a few days go back to it as well, as long as the end result is green fluid, not brown.
