In Italy if you buy a stolen car and you did not know it was stolen then you still own it. It is the same in several other EU countries as well. Not all countries have the same laws as the UK.

Any update on this - interested to hear what happened, did you get a good value from your insurance payout - did Volvo ever get back in touch?

Sorry about your loss OP.

Have you thought about getting a Ring or Nest doorbell/camera? Both allow you to set up a motion zone so if anyone enters your property it will notify you (app notification and chimes) and automatically record a video. Whilst I don't believe it will deter a determined thief, it does provide you with video evidence for the police and deters the amateur thief.

I have a Ring doorbell on my place. It helped to deter a couple of guys who were scouting our house (saw them on camera). They moved on when they noticed the camera to the Range Rover across the road.

I have a number of nest cameras but have the person alerts chime turned off as I object to being woken up by false positives.....

No sign of the car. I am expecting the insurance company to contact me shortly regarding payout/replacement car.

A Ring Doorbell only has a limited field of view. My car was parked with the bonnet towards the house and would have shielded any view of the thieves. I do have a motion sensitive camera that records movement where the car was parked. However at the time they got into the car it was recording in the opposite direction. I can only assume that they somehow 'distracted' it.

I was thinking about the solution to this issue which would allow Volvo and potentially other car markers to resolve the issue with only minor updates.

Firstly an option in the app (or within Senus) to set an alert time-frame (like a do not disturb time-frame on a phone). In the app you would be able to set the time-frame when additional security access is required e.g. between the hours of 9pm and 6am.

During this time period to enter and start the car:
  1. You'll get a notification anytime the car is unlocked or engine is started (regardless of the key used).
  2. The car will only unlock and won't start unless a request is accepted in the app (2 factor authentication for car entry) Alternatively....
  3. The car will only unlock and won't start unless an additional sequence of key presses is activated. Alternatively....
  4. The car will only unlock and won't start unless a code is entered on the sensus screen (a pin code).
  5. Failure to do so will result in the car engine not starting when the engine knob is turned and also result in the car alarm sounding.

This would require no hardware modification - while the thieves can access the code to gain entry to the car they would not have access to the keycode required on the screen or in the case of requiring authentication via the app - they would not have access to the phone.

This would be entirely optional for the end users and enabled in the app or on the Sensus onscreen interface.

The updates required by Volvo would be simple enough -
  • Sensus software update to add a phone style number pad unlock function.
  • Volvo on Call app update to authorize requests to start the vehicle and to set a time frame in which you want this to happen.

Obviously this solution doesn't stop a thief from entering your home and forcing you to unlock the car - however due to current ease to steal a car from someones drive using a simple key clone having these additional options during the evening and night would make a huge difference to stop crime.

Currently this crime is LOW risk and HIGH reward - adding these security steps would suddenly make the crime HIGH risk which would definitely limit the number of opportunistic thieves looking for an easy target.

One of the problems with the app, is time delay, sometimes it is a quick notification, other times really quite a delay, But I do think it is something that could be looked at especially for a code lock to start when you are in the car.

I like your logical lateral thinking, but without wanting to put a damper at all on your great idea - how would this function on a remote Welsh hillside that has zero mobile reception for mobile phones?

Well for some Functions Personal Hotspot wifi, that is set up to the car, so when you are close to the car it should connect the car to the app.

Surely that is overthinking it a bit, the simple solution is to simply stop the engine once it has detected that the key isn't within range anymore, i.e. once they actually stop using their booster or at most a couple of seconds after they drive off your driveway.

That and ensure there is adequate security to ensure it can't be started via OBD without the key being in range once it has stopped.

In absense of that, scrap keyless the convineince isn't worth the cons. At the moment it appears no better than the sutuation in the 70s where any Ford key would in pretty much any other Ford etc.
