I had my 850 T5 converted about 1000 miles ago, a BRC system. Used to get about 21mpg on Petrol, get around 18mpg on gas. I would say power has increased slightly.
Come down from 23p a mile to 13-14p a mile, and that's booting it around. If I floor it when the gas tank is under 20% full, sometimes it cuts over to petrol, but I think this is just low pressure in the gas tank. It's a 61ltr in the spare wheel well, the biggest to keep the boards flat. Not sure how many pipes I've got though! James |

Hi all
I'm very tempted to get a conversion for my thirsty beast! I have a 2.4R and was wondering if anyone has done the conversion on this model. Should the car/engine feel more responsive with lpg on this model? Also I would like to get it RICAd so would it be best to get this done before the conversion or after? And would there be a difference in power/performance afterwards? I reckon I could recoup my money in 12 - 18 months depending on cost of lpg and fuel increases for petrol etc! I reckon a BRC system is the best way to go? Any thoughts? Any thoughts/opinions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you Paul

I've done some pretty thorough research.
Don't be tempted by the cheaper systems as they have components of inferior quality and are less suited to our type of engines. BRC is the best system for high pressure turbo's as it will easily cope with the extra oomph. I've been quoted £2100 inc vat as a guide. Prins, although well regarded, will struggle to cope with the power. Do factor in servicing costs, though, as this will mean payback may be longer than you think. Jez

Hi Jez
Thanks for your quick reply, do you know how much the servicing is and how regularly does it need to be checked out? I'd forgotten about that part!! BRC definitely sounds the way to go especially with the RICA. I live in Bristol so I'd have thought there would be plenty of companies within relatively easy reach that will do the BRC conversion. It's definitely time to start thinking about some saving money...oh yeah and the planet etc etc!! Thanks again Paul

Get the LPG done after the remap as then it can be correctly tuned to cope with the extra fuel the remap needs.

Thank you John.
I'll make sure I get the remap soon then!

JUST TO STICK MY NOSE IN HERE, I HAVE NOW GOT A 96 MODEL 850 I HAVE OWNED IT FOR ABOUT 6 WEEKS NOW AND IT IS ON LPG - TARTARINI SINGLE POINT, I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THEM UNTIL I SPOKE WITH A VERY GOOD FRIEND OF MINE WHO RUNS A 97 V70 ON LPG, HE HAS HAD VERY GOOD RESULTS FROM IT AND IT WAS HIM THAT ENCOURAGED MY BY EXPLAINING THE GOOD POINTS, I HAVE HAD 6 VOLVO'S NOW AND I JUST LOVE THEM ESPECIALLY FOR COMFORT, BUT ALWAYS THE ONE MAIN DRAWBACK WAS ECONOMY, BUT LUCKILY I BOUGHT THIS AT THE START OF FEB THIS YEAR AND THE DIFFERENCE IT HAS MADE HAS DEFINITELY MADE ME A CONVERT, LPG IS DEFINITELY THE WAY TO GO

Hi all,
thanks for your replies. I'm definitely tempted to get it but i've spoken to a couple of people and they have their concerns and say that the bigger higher pressure turbo'd engines never run right after conversions. I guess if they are correctly done there shouldn't be any problems? Or am i just being optimistic! If I chip it, then LPG it, even if I lose some power I will still be running something quite beefy. Cheers Paul

Following some of the earlier comments, decided to do a health check and replaced some of the vacuum hoses. This seems to have done the trick and she now pulls strongly on LPG as well with full boost. If you are going LPG, there are a few rules.
Make sure you conduct a stage 0 tune up first. New plugs , leads etc. Get the biggest tank you can fit in the car. Go to a reputable conversion specialist and dont buy a cheap system..false economy. Very happy with my BRC and over 4000 miles of relatively (see above) trouble free motoring at 47-55 pence per litre. Equates to 10-11 pence per mile. My 1.9tdi Audi used to do 8.5 pence per mile so as you can see, it is nearly as economical as running a german diesel car. |
