Also pad the load if it is going to chaff or wear the straps through.

My father-in-law had his post office van sliced through the middle (horizontally) by a sheet of steel that sliced through its tethers on a flat-bed lorry. He would have been father-in-laws (note the plural) if he hadn't been out of the van emptying a letter box at the time.

It doesn't bear thinking about...

^^
A sheet of steel sounds horrific but I've been in a similar incident on the motorway which was 'just' an 8x4 sheet of plywood. The sheet of plywood was lifted off of a vehicle in front of me just by the force of the slipstream of air, fortunately for me it flipped to vertical and went down the side of my truck, it then flipped to horizontal and embedded itself in the nearside of the windscreen of the truck beside me, fortunately there was no passenger and the driver was the luckiest guy on the motorway that day. An 8x4 sheet of ply isn't light and the guy who lost it obviously chucked it on the back of his truck and thought 'well that ain't going nowhere', how wrong could he be?!

Primary reason was to carry a roof box, however there will be times when I want to carry a ladder or a few lengths of timber

What do you guys use to secure the load to the roof rails? I'm thinking bungee cords (those ones with the hooks on either end) or possibly just a length or cord / thin rope?

Obviously to avoid an insecure load situation, security of the load is paramount.
Another +1 for Ratchet straps here too!
