"Pinging" sound?
I've recently noticed a quiet but distinctive high pitched, low-volume, occasional pinging sound that can repeats every 5 to 10 seconds when driving along normally in gear. No problems with the car (2.0D V50) - any ideas?!

I get that sound sometimes, but only when the aircon is on. I should think it's the relay or the magnetic clutch. But I don't hear it as frequently as that.

The sound you hear is the drive shaft bolts, if you take off the centre covers you will either fins a slack bolt or one that's no longer even in place. You need to get new bolts and have them Loctited in.
It is a common problem and if you search for pinging or pinking then you should get a few threads to look over. |

Not sure if related but my air con stopped working yesterday and I haven't heard the "ping" sound since - wondering if the sound was something to do with the condenser? In any event the car is booked in for its annual service with Volvo next week so will see if it's just a re-gas (last done two years ago) or a new condenser... Will also be asking for the drivetrain bolts to be checked.

Not got the car back yet - but had a call from the dealership today saying that the sound was diagnosed as coming from a wiring loom that had come loose, so now sorted... fingers crossed.
