Just been outside, checked the battery voltage when running, 14.5V, doubt that would be considered to high ?

Hmm, on my S40 2.0D(2005) it is 13.3V, when it gets over 2200rmp it is 13.8V Alternator has been replaced few months ago, the previous one=12.6V.

the charging voltage on the volvo diesel s4o/v50 is 14.5 volts if the proper alternator is fitted, that is 150 amp alternator!
there is an additive used in the diesel tank to burn off soot in the exhaust it can smell like eggs, it burns when the exhaust is really hot during a long fast run, this is normal!
