Default Towing without prop shaft (2wd)

My 2010 XC90 D5 has had a ringing sound (like a child running a metal bar against railings). I’ve had it in with an indi who diagnosed either prop shaft or front cv joint. They called today to say it’s highly likely cv joint as prop shaft looks ok after inspection and they have ordered a replacement part. The issue being they are struggling with getting certain items in and can’t promise me a date when they will have it.

They have said they’ve made it safe and it will drive ok in 2wd drive, and for me to pick it up and return it once the part is in.

I need to tow our single axle caravan on 15th Aug (van is about 1200kg loafed). They have indicated it should be fine to tow.

Just a little concerned though all my previous cars where just front wheel drive. Have I got anything to worry about? Will it do any damage to my car?

Any advise is welcome 🙏

It may also depend on how loaded the car is, see at page 159

As said it will not damage the car and will tow fine, but be careful about trying to set off quickly at junctions and roundabouts in the wet - soggy campsites too.

Be also mindful that part of the cars safety systems is also inoperable, the stability and traction control systems are built around being able to use the AWD system - your insurer may also take a dim view if you have a serious accident and they find the prop removed. All most unlikely but potentially significant consequences.

BTW from how you describe the noise it's almost certainly the front CV.

Thank you for all the replies. I’ve picked it up and it is noticeable but drives fine. They think it will be in early next week so fingers crossed it’s sorted before. I will heed the advice here re driving considerations.
