Default tyre problem

Hi there

Took my Volvo V50 SE D5 2007 Automatic 115,000 miles for an MOT today, i knew the tyres on the front were boarder line, but when the car went on the ramp to my horror , the inside edges of both front tyres were badly worn down to the point where the wires & canvas were showing.

Looking at the tyres more closely i cant understand why this should be as the wear is uniform across the whole tyre apart from the edges, its as if the wheel is catching the chasis on full lock, but i have checked and it isnt.

The alloys on the car are sakuras with 205/50/17 tyres, luckly i bought a set of other alloys a year ago with near brand new tyres on them, i swiftly changed the alloys over and got the garage to check the tracking.
the tracking was spot on.

So has anyone got any idea how or why this has happened, as i dont want to ruin the new tyres i've just swapped over. Wheel bearing play was also checked and both fine. The tyres were goodyears so cheap brand tyres is not the answer. I dont drive the car hard, please look at the photos for picture evidence. Wot could of caused this?

I had this problem but found that the bottom arm bushes were shot
Changed bottom arms 2 years ago and tyre wear has been fine
Also had a problem with rears doing the same
I now run with all tyre pressures at 36-38 and it has improved tyre wear 100%.
I also had a slow on the rear which didn't help matters

Default Speed humps?

Do you have a lot of speed humps around your way? Specifically the type that's a patch in the road that you end up straddling.

A few years ago we had exactly the same problem as you with another car. Tacking was all fine but then they asked about speed humps. I had been lining the car up so both wheels just touched the hump which gave a smoother ride but it had gradually been wearing away the inside of the tyre. After that I made sure that one side of the car was on the road and the other on the hump and had no more issues with odd tyre wear.

Just a thought ...

the tyre wear is so exactly the same on each tyre, you would just think you had rubbed the tyres on full lock against a sharp edge on the chassis and shaved the tyres.

its as if the wheels were pointing like an inverted V

checked tyres the smorning and no signs of wear yet after doing a 10 mile round trip, will keep checking daily for signs of feathering.

worn bushes may have caused this.

I'm getting a similar issue but mine only seems to be effecting the near side tyres, front and back... had a blow out on the motorway the other week on the near side rear and the whole of the inner part of the tyre was bald! The front was doing the same, yet offside are fine front and back. Mine also pulls to the left, which may be part of the problem... I don't know!

Edit: I was running conti sport contact 3's as well!

I had this problem on the Rear left hand tyre on my V50. It turned out that the Toe was Miles out. the minimum is 0.6mm and the maximum is 1.2mm my toe was actually -0.6 on the left and -0.2 on the right. I have a full print out from the company: DSC_0064.jpg

caused mine to wear like hell on the inner edge. its also just had an MOT and no bushings ect flagged so it all seems ok.

lower wishbones polybushed - will sharpen handling with minimal refinement loss.

get the alignment done

should be job done
