Default V50 Egg smell

Hi all,

Well Im 1 month into owning my first Volvo, a 2lt diesel 05 V50, 86k on the clock FSH etc, and Im very pleased so far, its great car

There's just one thing I find odd and cant seem to understand why it happens.
As I accelerate through the box and decelerate down the box, there is always a slight whiff of eggs (no its not me) either with the windows open or closed.

Any ideas ?

I got told that a whiffing of egg's is the sign of a knackered cat.. I'll find out soon enough as mine stinks when you give it a bootfull so I'll be taking it off in the coming weeks.

Racing?... perish the thought, just a little spirited driving now and again. Appologies to the OP I didn't notice it was a diesel.

I had the exact same problem mate and i had a good sniff around and it turned out to be the windscreen wash!! Either the wash i put in went off or the water went stagnent. i flushed mine out with the hose pipe and it has sorted it. This maybe the case with yours so have a sniff around the washer filler cap.

Screenwash or battery getting cooked by over regulated alternator.
I used boiled water from the kettle (when cold) screenwash, kills the germs.

Check voltage of battery with engine running

Thanks for the ideas all, I will test the battery, flush the washer bottle out and get some advise about the Cat.

Just does it when I either go down or up the box at lower speeds, 1st,2nd,3rd

Cheers

Just been outside, checked the battery voltage when running, 14.5V, doubt that would be considered to high ?

But, then opened the washer bottle lid, put my nose to the top and OH the smell !
That's it !

Flushed it through a few times, filled it with cold boiled water, then some new screen wash and been out for a little run round, no smell !!!

I can carry on enjoying my Volvo

Thanks all
