Default Scraping noise - skid pan? wheel arch liner?

Hey there, my first post, I own an 05 1.6d s40.

Just on the way to the shops I heard from scraping noises, pulled over to look for it, and it seems under the front of the car near the drivers wheel the plastic part (skid pan) is missing a screw, which means a few things are loose around there (although, if that screw was there, it doesn't look like it would hold everything together - the skid pan bit, the wheel lining bit and the front part just under the bumper!). Plus its not loose enough to scrape on the floor, so not sure where that came from (although it has now stopped).

Is the best thing to just take it to a garage so they can put it on a lift and see what's under it? It was just on one at the weekend getting 2 new front tyres.

I guess you are referring to the undertray which protects the bottom part of the engine. Usually held in place by about 6 screws or bolts. Mine got bolted back on when the timing belt was done.

Could it be the wheel arch liner is fouling as it has been disturbed. The tyre place wouldnt have had to take it off, so it may have come loose. No great drama.

look behind the brake disc. There is a flimsy metal shield often a stone can get trapped here and dependant on the steering angle, speed etc makes a horric noise. Lever it out with a screwdriver. Get this issue a lot on the wet muddy winter roads I drive on. Poor design.

That'll be the bit! I finger tightened some of the bolts that were then just now as I noticed they were loose. I just don't have any stands to put it up higher to get to the rest of it better.

I'll have to take it to a garage I think, unless I wait until I head south soon and take a look at it on my fathers stands (and do the brake pads with him too!)

I actually had that issue about a month ago! But this one I am sure must be the loose fittings under the front.

If memory serves its a 10mm size and a couple are a pig to tighten up. When you do the brakes, make sure you get a decent pad as "cheaper" ones are dreadful. Learnt that lesson.
