Cold start terrible whine
On these cold mornings, I'm hearing a terrible whine from the engine bay, it lasts for about a mile or so. It's related to engine revs, and quite loud. Could it be a pulley? Would the noise of a pulley bearing stop once warm? Not sure what else it could be....not sure if I can record it nd put it on here?

Belt slipping on condensation? Don’t know if that’s a thing these days though.

Not a bad shout.
It's not quite the high pitched squeal you used to hear with old fan belts.

Do you get a smell of burning rubber? If so belt slipping or worn belt.
If not could be something with a dry bearing - alternator, a/c clutch, idler etc. I'd be tempted to have a listen with one of these.... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MECHANICS...MAAOSwMuZbzYxY

A quick way to tell if a belt is slipping is to spray or pour a little water onto it while the engine is running; I’m not talking about a lot, maybe a cup full at most. If the noise stops, then the belt is at fault; if not, then it is bearing related.

Apparently the noise is the Power Steering Pump.
Volvo quote for replacement: Remove/replace £323 Servo pump £380 Ring £5 VAT £144 Total: £862 (roughly)

I had similar which fortunately transpired was a low fluid level in power steering due to a small leak

They do get noisy when the fluid is low... That price seems a lot to replace it, it's a doddle on the D5's but not sure how accessible it is on the V8?
