Default Black smoke. Drumming noise and uneven idle.

Hi. I have a 2007 xc90 d5 185 auto. It suffers a uneven idle. And has a drumming type noise coming from the right hand side of the engine bay. It also throws out a lot of black smoke on acceleration and also some grey smoke at other times. There are no fault codes stored. The engine pulls strong. Any ideas. As I’m lost. Many thanks Damian.

Have good look at your boost hoses & intercooler for leaks.

D5 engines are well known for having problems with the butterfly valves in the inlet manifold . What are swirl flaps? Swirl flaps are small butterfly valves located within the inlet manifold on modern diesel and petrol engines, they are designed to help regulate the fuel to air ratio, improve emissions and help generate better torque at low engine speeds .

Broken link arm , blocked EGR , gunk in inlet manifold could all cause your problems . Black smoke is unburnt fuel & it is not hard to realise stuck butterfly's reducing / cutting off air flow into the cylinders , BUT the manifold pressure sensor tells the ECU it's on boost and increases fuel flow , resulting in black smoke .

I have used a USB endoscope that links to my android phone for looking into many manifolds & was worth te £12 it cost & saves a compost heap of time & swearwords

I have found out what’s wrong. The swirl flap arm is missing on my car. There’s nothing coming out of the engine. Just a hole.
