Make sure you did the check correctly first. Cold engine and not been started for a couple of hours. As per the instructions in the handbook. Then if it's still incorrect follow Clan's instructions.

Castrol Edge Professional V 0W-20 or VCC RBS0-2AE 0w20

is the correct spec for the New VEA engines

It is available from dealers , TOTAL have just introduced it , but it is unlikely they will retail in in Litre bottles due to lack of demand . ask them ...
Yes, I have read that as well, it is not just the lubrication/cleaning of the engine but the wrong by-product can damage the emissions system.
I am wary of mixing similar spec oils from different manufacturers, back in the day we had scores of tape-based professional video cameras. Each tape has a thin coating of lubricant to ease its path through the tape transport. Mixing different brands of the tape was a disaster as they used different lubricants and if trace amounts mixed in the tape transport it caused all sorts of issues as the lubricants reacted.

I have found my spec oil on Amazon, Castrol Edge professional A5 0-30

Ok i'm new to this site having recently bought a 2016 S80 D4, anyway i've done about 6k miles and the car has told me it needs 1ltr of oil, there's no dipstick it's all electronic which i don't have a problem with but after looking for the grade of oil i've seen 2 possibilities online either a 0w20 or a 0w30 which has brought me here where i noticed someone has posted that you have to use Castrol Edge Professional as "it has been specially developed for the D4 engine" which in my mind is total bull as the oil is made to meet a specific grade and if you had to use a specific brand Volvo would be making this clear.

Anyway as i still wasn't sure about what grade my engine needs i decided to give my local Volvo dealer a call, they have told me that when any Volvo comes in for service it will get all the same oil 5w40 which they buy in bulk, i asked again if that was engine oil and they reaffirmed that if i took my car to them for an oil service it would be filled with 5w40 no matter what model, so what do you make of that.

I'd say someone was making up stories.

What engine is your D4? If it's the 4-cylinder VEA then it needs a 0w-20 that meets Volvo spec VCC RBS0-2AE. Several oil companies produce this.

I would report the dealer , that is against volvos franchise agreement and also will invalidate the warranty ...
as from 2015 there are only two oils , 0W/30 for the 5 cylinder and the specified 0W/20 for the 4 cylinder as described in the above post ...

I was a bit sceptical to say the least and by the way this is a franchised dealership i'm talking about and not a "Volvo specialist" i've since called Rycroft Warrington which is the dealership the car came from originally and they have confirmed it's 0w20 grade i need, that they use Castrol Edge professional but that any quality motor oil that meets the 0w20 grade would be fine and not cause any damage.

if i was the sceptical sort, then i'd say i might have been privy to a motor trade secret told to me by someone that doesn't regularly speak to the public, but hey the motor trade is as honest as the day is long so it was more than likely a mistake right?

It is again not true that any 0W/20 that meets the grade will do , It has to meet the volvo VCC RBS0-2AE specification . This is getting easier to obtain now , although the dealer sells it in 1 litre bottles .

So why use the 0w20 grade at all then? if you say not all 0w20 oils meet the spec why not make it obvious? i know the sticker on the slam panel under the bonnet recommends Castrol Edge Professional, but that's a recommendation

It is obvious , Volvos 0w/20 has VCC RBS0-2AE on the bottle , This is a special formula developed for volvo's new engine by castrol and volvo otherwise it is not suitable. This is the same way Germany has been doing it for a long time .
0w/20 is a viscosity or "thickness"description , the VCC RBS0-2AE part is the formulation or mix of ingredients ...

Why would the D4 need 0w-20 oil anyway? What's so special compared to D2 or D3 engines?
Given that I've heard multiple Volvo dealers are using thicker oils like 5w-40, it might seem that using 0w-20 is not that big of a deal in the UK - the weather doesn't get that cold
