Default Massive fines for failing MOT from May 2018

Apologies if this has been covered before, if it has Ive missed it.
all the rags have covered the story, some more sensationally than others.

In a nutshell, should ones vehicle fail mot on something serious, and y get caught driving it, could get a whopper off the magistrate. This even if old MOT still current

the key point
Vehicles will no longer be road legal if they fail the test – even if the old certificate is still valid.
Therefore there is no longer any reason to submit the car early, giving time to fix it before mot expires.

The Star has a simple version, unsurprisingly. https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/lat...-loophole-fine

The Wail describes a new way that the universe might end, and also has this
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-500-fine.html
They note that missing brake pads or discs are a new fail - not really, as their absence suggests the brakes dont work properly, which has always been a fail right from the first mot test in the 60s

The Suns report is quite good.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/motors/5423...8-cars-diesel/

Theres also a get-rid-of-diseasals clause, ANY visible smoke is a fail. Unless the old jalopy has 40 years under its wheels, then its exempt from any test. Madness.

Of course, all of us are responsible motorists with crystal balls so that we know when a problem is starting. These new rules only affect THE OTHERS.

Faults will be
Minor - what are currently advisories - these pass.
Major - fail
Dangerous - fail. and illegal to drive the car on the road, even to take away from testing station. Car must be recovered home, likes of AA will rightly say that it hasnt broken down, its lack of maintenance, and they wont do it for you. A good money spinner for garages methinks. I dont see anyone offering a discount on new brake pads, do you ?

My MOT is due in late May. Rest assured I will be getting it done early so that if it does fail for any reason, I shan't fall foul of the new rules.

Can't say I disagree with any of it though. I just wish it would come with a clampdown on unscrupulous testers as well - those who test for work and those who bend the rules.

None of your post is true, except for the bits which aren't changing.

Have you any evidence of this from an official source?

It's always been the case that if a car fails an MOT it shouldn't be driven until the problems are fixed. This isn't changing - and I can see nothing to say the old MOT is invalid.

The diesel smoke thing is inaccurately reported by the Mail too - what a surprise.

Are you a reporter by any chance? Love the way you've attempted to completely mislead people with the thread title. Nobody is going to get fined for having a car fail an MoT, however, after May, as has always been the case, if you use a vehicle on the road in a dangerous condition, and get caught, you may well be prosecuted and fined for doing so.

In any case, garages will spring up offering "pre MOT checks". Many already do this.

You know one thing op and everyone who owns a car knows also, you're going to get screwed, pockets of you're trousers emptied by the govt wielding a long handled ratchet. No news or surprise there.
